KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University field hockey senior
Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) scored twice for the Golden Bears in a tense Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match against the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University, but with less than a minute left in regulation, ESU scored to earn a 3-2 win at University Field.
"I think our team left it all out on the field today," head coach
Marci Scheuing said. "They truly battled until the very end of the game, and they gave it everything they had. We could have done some things different to avoid this outcome, but really, they gave it all they had."
It did not take the Golden Bears long to score first. Reynolds scored her first of two goals for the Golden Bears in the 14th minute off of a penalty corner, assisted by
Anna Behm (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) and
Jess Strohecker (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry).
In the 22nd minute, East Stroudsburg's Brielle Kessel carried the ball into the circle and went one-on-one with KU's goalkeeper to tie the game 1-1 going into the break.
The Golden Bears scored first in the second half. Reynolds received a pass from Behm in the 43rd minute, and Reynolds ripped it past the ESU goalkeeper for her 10th of the season to give KU the 2-1 advantage.
The game-tying goal came from ESU in the 49th minute. Ally Roth, who leads the PSAC in goals this season, scored off of a penalty corner, assisted by Becky Gagliardi. Emily Howell scored the game-winner with less than a minute left, receiving a cross in the middle from Kessel.
"I think we showed up and wanted to win this game," Reynolds said. "It is a bittersweet ending. I thought Elly (Skinner) had an awesome game, and I also thought Jamie (Koenig) showed up to play as well. I think we played our hearts out during the game, and we left it all on the field."
The Warriors outshot Kutztown 26-17, and had 10 penalty corners to Kutztown's four. PSAC Athlete of the Week
Rachael Sanders (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg (Limestone)) had an outstanding performance in the cage. Despite the offensive pressure ESU created, she held her ground and finished strong with 11 saves.
This was the final game of the season for the Golden Bears, but it was a good run that kept them in the playoff picture until the final game of the season. Scheuing improved Kutztown's record from 5-12 last season, to 7-10 this season, and the program is only going to improve. Scheuing is bringing in a strong recruiting class, and she has high hopes for next season.
