Starting the day with a position round, Kutztown struggled to make consistent shots against third-ranked University of Central Missouri, falling 849-964. The team bounced back in the second match to defeat Cheyney University 1020-624, a day-high score for the Golden Bears.

Despite bowling well the third round, Kutztown had a tough loss against Monmouth University, losing 957-1062. In the fourth match, Kutztown lost to tournament-host UMES (ranked fifth), 992-1038. The team finished the day by shooting 927 during a bye round.

"Despite our losses today, we didn't bowl that bad," head coach Joseph Ambrose said. "We have a chance to win three extremely important matches tomorrow, and need to focus on first-ball counts and spares."

Senior Brooke Bower (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) led the Golden Bears for the day, averaging 207.6 for five games. Senior Deanna DiRado (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem) and junior Christine Gordon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) also bowled during all five matches, averaging 189.4 and 193.4, respectively.

Sophomore Kayla Maselkevich (Drums, PA/Hazleton Area) was subbed in halfway through game one, and averaged 197.3 for the last four games.

"As a team, we need to continue to execute our shots," Maselkevich commented. "We need to keep up a positive outlook and keep our future goal of nationals in mind."

The UMES Hawk Classic concludes tomorrow, Nov. 17, with three best-of-seven baker matches.
