MILLSBORO, Del. – The 12th-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team finished day two of the UMES Hawk Classic with a 1-3 record, and a pinfall total of 4745 after five traditional games. The Golden Bears currently trail behind University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Fairleigh Dickinson, with a shot at the tournament title tomorrow, Nov. 17.
Starting the day with a position round, Kutztown struggled to make consistent shots against third-ranked University of Central Missouri, falling 849-964. The team bounced back in the second match to defeat Cheyney University 1020-624, a day-high score for the Golden Bears.
Despite bowling well the third round, Kutztown had a tough loss against Monmouth University, losing 957-1062. In the fourth match, Kutztown lost to tournament-host UMES (ranked fifth), 992-1038. The team finished the day by shooting 927 during a bye round.
"Despite our losses today, we didn't bowl that bad," head coach
Joseph Ambrose said. "We have a chance to win three extremely important matches tomorrow, and need to focus on first-ball counts and spares."
Senior
Brooke Bower (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) led the Golden Bears for the day, averaging 207.6 for five games. Senior
Deanna DiRado (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem) and junior
Christine Gordon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) also bowled during all five matches, averaging 189.4 and 193.4, respectively.
Sophomore
Kayla Maselkevich (Drums, PA/Hazleton Area) was subbed in halfway through game one, and averaged 197.3 for the last four games.
"As a team, we need to continue to execute our shots," Maselkevich commented. "We need to keep up a positive outlook and keep our future goal of nationals in mind."
The UMES Hawk Classic concludes tomorrow, Nov. 17, with three best-of-seven baker matches.
