KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University field hockey senior
Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades) scored the eventual game-winning goal to send the Golden Bears past Seton Hill University, 2-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match, giving Kutztown its second shutout of the weekend on Saturday night at University Field.
"(Our team) wanted this win, and they finished when it was needed," head coach
Marci Scheuing said. "I thought our defense played unbelievably. Rachel Sanders got her second straight shutout, and she was on fire. She was the difference in the game."
The Golden Bears (7-8, 3-5 PSAC) didn't manage to score until the 33nd minute, when Koenig scored the only goal the Golden Bears would need. Her goal resulted from a passing pattern that began at midfield between
Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) and
Anna Behm (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown). Behm sent the ball to Koenig, and Koenig tipped it past Seton Hill's (4-10, 1-6) goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the season.
The final goal came from Behm in the 56th minute when she grabbed possession of the ball and flicked it over the SHU goalkeeper to give KU the 2-0 advantage and to notch her seventh goal of the season.
"Anna really had a nice game, and she had a lot of offensive breaks," Scheuing said. "I also thought Erin has a really nice game, and so did
Erin Danner (Marysville, PA/Susquenita), who had some unbelievable stops on defense."
Sanders was solid in net as she picked up her second shutout of the season. She totaled three saves.
The Golden Bears and Seton Hill were even on shot attempts with 10 apiece. Kutztown held an advantage in penalty corners 10-4.
Next up for the Golden Bears is a trip to second-ranked Millersville University in a PSAC match on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m.
"We are not going to focus on who they are, or what they have done," Scheuing said. "We are going to focus on what we need to do to win that game. Millersville is a very good team, but I think that we have become a good team towards the end of the season as well. After the way Rachel has been playing, I truly believe that we can play with anybody."
