Box Score #21 Slippery Rock 2, Kutztown 1 (HTML Box Score)
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A second half goal and three saves by Slippery Rock University defenders played the difference in the Kutztown University women's soccer team's 2-1 road setback on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup.
The Golden Bears (8-4, 8-4 PSAC) had their seven-game winning streak snapped by 21st-ranked Slippery Rock (9-2-1, 8-2-1) on Tuesday. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime, but Nicole Krueger's goal from 30 yards out in the 64th minute sealed the victory for The Rock, their fourth win in a row.
Slippery Rock took its first lead in the sixth minute of action. On its first chance of the game, Lauren Impey sent a long free kick into the box as The Rock's Andrea Felix was the first to the ball and flicked it over the Kutztown goalkeepers head for the early lead.
The Golden Bears responded with a near-goal four minutes later.
Hanna Fenstermacher (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) had her shot stopped by a Slippery Rock defender on the goal line to keep Kutztown off the board.
In the 29th minute, Kutztown gained possession of a loose ball in front of the opposing net.
Megan Frailer (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) took advantage and scored off a deflected pass from
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) for her fourth goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Trailing 2-1, Kutztown needed to be opportunistic with any chance it had. In the 66th minute, two minutes after Slippery Rock's second goal, Kutztown's
Katie Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) had her shot go past the SRU keeper, but kicked off the goal line by a defender. 14 minutes later in the 70th minute,
Logan Kramer (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor (Arkansas State)) had her shot stopped by a defender as both team saves prevented Kutztown goals.
With fresh bodies in the lineup, Kutztown worked for a corner kick in the 89th minute, but was unable to get a shot on net.
Kutztown was out-shot for just the second time all season in the setback, 14-9. It had five more corner kicks than Slippery Rock (8-3), but simply could not get quality shots on net to beat the Slippery Rock goalkeeper.
Next up for Kutztown is another nationally-ranked team. Ninth-ranked California University (PA) makes its way to Keystone Field this Saturday, Oct. 19, for a PSAC contest beginning at 1 p.m.
