KU Tops Fifth-Ranked Slippery Rock

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and freshman Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) came out on top as KU's dream team, each scoring from each other's assists in the game against No. 5 Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon.

KU became the first team in 2012 to score on the Rock, who had shut out each of their first three opponents.

The offensive advantage was fought for between the Golden Bears and Slippery Rock for the entire duration of the first half, until Slippery Rock's Kara Mullins scored by header in the 42nd minute with an assist from Caitlin Binder.

Kutztown implemented a game changer in the beginning of the first half when Malanga received an assist from Costello, and headed the ball over Slippery Rock's goal keeper Dana O'Neill scoring in the 48th minute. This was not only the first goal of the game for KU, but the first goal to be scored on O'Neill this season.

KU's first goal amped up the Golden Bears for the rest of the game and in the 55th minute, Costello put the ball in the back of the net with an assist by Malanga.

The Golden Bears continued to hold the offensive lead, raining down shots and corner kicks, from which Slippery Rock could not recover. A foul on Slippery Rock gave opportunity to BrieAnn Shipkowski (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) to loft the ball in front of the goal where Costello headed it in, scoring the third and final goal for KU in the 59th minute.

KU more than tripled the shot tally of their opponents, finishing the game with 13 total shots to Slippery Rock's four.

The Golden Bears continue PSAC play when the travel to Bloomsburg on Wednesday, September 19 for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
