Box Score ATHENS, W.V. – Despite getting on the board first, the Kutztown University women's soccer team fell in its season opener on the road at Tusculum on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Tess Arbegast (Carlisle, PA/Big Spring) led the Golden Bears with a goal early in the second half to take a one goal lead.
After a scoreless first half of play, Arbegast found the back of the net in the 50th minute of action as KU took the lead on its seventh shot to break the deadlock. The lone goal for the Golden Bears would not hold up, as Alisha Pugh scored the equalizer at 62:09 which would eventually send play into extra time. In the extra frame, Kutztown failed to capitalize on a corner, giving life to the Pioneers who responded with the game-winner at 95:06 when Pugh found Tramicka James.
KU finished the afternoon with an 11-5 advantage in the shot department, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Maroon and Gold also held an advantage, attempting five corner kicks to the Pioneers two.
Junior
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) was charged with the loss for Kutztown in relief of junior
Casey Behrendt (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra), while Marissa Williams was credited with her first win of the season for the Pioneers, posting seven saves between the pipes.
The women will return to action on Sunday, day two of the Concord Kickoff Classic against Concord University. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
