KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team plays its final three games of the season on its home field. Three Golden Bear seniors will dress in the maroon and gold for the final time over the next seven days and will look to end their careers on a high note.
Leeann Pica (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy),
Megan Schwar (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg), and
Emily Solt (Bowmanstown, PA/Concord) (Bowmanstown, Pa./Concord) embark in the final part of their journey through the KU lacrosse program and will be honored before Saturday's 3:30 p.m. conference game against Lock Haven University at Keystone Field.
Kutztown (4-10 overall, 1-7 PSAC) will also face Indiana (Pa.) before Saturday's Senior Day, on Friday, Apr. 20 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup.
The trio has put together respectable careers over the past four years. They played crucial roles in helping the program become competitive since its reestablishment in 2008. Together, they also brought KU its first PSAC victory with a dramatic 11-10 road victory against Edinboro this season.
Pica has been a scoring machine in 2012. She leads the club with 21 goals and 26 points. She has six multi-goal games and tied her career-high of four goals against Philadelphia on Mar. 27. Pica also netted four goals in her freshman campaign in 2009 against Gannon. She scored a career-best 25 goals her freshman year, and tallied nine assists her sophomore season.
For her career, Pica ranks among the KU leaders in many offensive categories. She is the KU all-time leader in groundballs (168) and draw controls (138), and is second on the leaderboard in points (105), goals (81) and shots (223). In her 64 games on the field, head coach Sarah Greer has seen the Communication Design major grow into a great leader, both on and off the field.
“Leeann leads by example,” Greer said. “She grew into a more vocal leader in her time here, and her conditioning and dedication outside of practice will be missed.”
Schwar saved her best season for last in 2012. In her senior year alone, she has more than doubled her career goals. Coming into this season, Schwar netted 14 goals including a previous career-high of six in her freshman season in 2009. She has stormed onto the scene this year with 17 goals, good for third on the team. Just as impressive, her eight assists lead the Golden Bears as she has a pair of multi-assist performances (Mercyhurst & Edinboro).
The Criminal Justice major and Sociology minor has four hat tricks in her career, three of which coming this season (Bloomsburg, Chestnut Hill, Shippensburg). Schwar has played in 58 games and enters the weekend with 31 career goals with 11 assists. She's picked up 137 groundballs and has been active all over the field by controlling 73 draw controls.
“Megan is a strong and aggressive player who always works hard,” Greer said. “She has grown into a much more controlled player and has been a great part of our team.”
Solt is a three year member of the Golden Bears. She has improved her performance every year and is currently having a career-best season. The Bowmanstown native has scored 18 goals on her 31 shots on goal, and has contributed a pair of assists for KU. She has two hat tricks this season with her biggest coming in KU's PSAC victory over Edinboro on Apr. 18.
The Criminal Justice major and Paralegal Studies minor has 35 goals in her career with eight assists, but her qualities that do not necessarily show up on a stat sheet may be her most valuable to the Golden Bears.
“Emily is a very caring, understanding, and supportive leader,” Greer said. “She is always very helpful to her teammates and coaches, and is the backbone of the team. She has grown into an all-around player and outstanding leader.”
All three seniors will be graduating in May with their respective degrees.
