WEST CHESTER, Pa. (April 1, 2012)—The Kutztown University women's tennis team clinched a 5-4 nail biter over West Chester University Sunday afternoon, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest at South Campus Courts.
The Golden Bears (6-7 overall) improved to 2-0 in the PSAC. Kutztown and West Chester (6-7 overall, 1-1 PSAC) each took three singles' wins.
Hannah Pipkin (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) (Landisville, PA/ Hempfield) defeated Brittany Counts 6-2 in the first set. Pipkin dropped the second set with a 2-6 setback, but took the third set with a 6-2 win.
Ridhima Borooah (Guwahati-Assam, India/Modern School; Barakhamba Road; New Delhi) (Guwahati-Assam, India/ Modern School; Barakhamba Road; New Delhi) grabbed a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Alison Fetter. The Golden Rams took the next three wins as Alex Santoro defeated
Rachel Grula (Drums, PA/Hazleton Area) (Drums, PA/Hazelton Area), 7-6, 6-2, Nicole Paller capped a 6-2, 6-0 win over
Chelsea White (Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove) (Landenberg, PA/ Avon Grove), and Haley Wissinger edged
Stefanie Fisher (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot), 6-3, 6-2.
However
Jennifer Stow (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) (Glen Mills, PA/ Garnett Valley) helped put Kutztown back on top with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rebecca Thiel.
KU took two of three doubles matches. Pipkin and Borooah took an 8-3 win over Counts and Fetter. Wissinger and Nicole Paller responded with a 9-7 feat against
Tori Zander (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) (Pennsburg, PA/ Upper Perkiomen) and White. The Golden Bears took home the final doubles match as Grula and Fisher edged Santoro and MacKenzie Breinlinger, 8-4.
Kutztown will travel to Millersville University on Tuesday, April 3 to continue its conference schedule. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m.
