CARY, N.C. – Five pitchers on the Kutztown University baseball team teamed up to shutout Shaw University in back to back games of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.  KU rolled to a 13-0 victory in the opener at USA Baseball Complex, and scored in each of the first five innings in the nightcap on its way to a 9-0 win.

Right handers J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Corey Snyder (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) combined to no-hit Shaw through the first five innings in the opener.  Seader got the start and struck out four batters in three innings of work.  Snyder took over in the fourth and sat down all six batters he faced while picking up his second win of the season.  Senior right hander Trent Mertz (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) closed it out for KU by allowing just one hit in the final two innings.

The trio's one hit allowed is the fewest for Kutztown since Nate Reed, now playing in the Seattle Mariners organization, threw a complete game no-hitter on Apr. 18, 2010.

The Golden Bears (9-3) also tallied a season-high 15 hits with four multi-hit performers.  Freshman Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) sprayed a season-high three hits.  The leadoff second baseman connected on one of his three singles to start the game for KU.  He also crossed the plate in the first to give the Golden Bears the early three run advantage.

After a 5-0 lead after two, the game seemed all but over after KU plated three in both the fourth and fifth innings.  Brandon Shurr (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) knocked in a pair of runs in the two innings and ended the day 2-for-4 at the plate.  Andrew Otterberg (Wall Township, N.J./Wall Township) (Wall Township, NJ/Wall Township) also knocked in two runs in the middle two innings and ended with a game-high three RBIs.

Kutztown also started off with a three-run first inning in the second game of the twin bill.  Junior catcher Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) and Snyder each had RBI hits in the inning.  Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown), John Iezzi (West Chester, PA/Henderson) (West Chester, PA/Henderson), and Albaugh continued to help the cause with RBIs in the second, third, and fourth innings, respectively.

Gorrell was the only Golden Bear with two hits in the nightcap.  He followed his perfect game one with a 2-for-4 outing to increase his batting average to a team-high .500 on the season.

Freshman Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville) (West Chester, PA/Unionville) flourished in his first start of the season.  He struck out seven batters in his five innings of work on the mound to pick up his first collegiate victory.  He scattered just two hits in his 18 batters faced.  Jason Henderson (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) closed it out for KU with two innings of no-hit ball. He also struck out four batters and lowered his ERA to 1.59 in his sophomore season.

Three Golden Bears recorded their first hit of the season on Tuesday.  T.J. Johnson (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall/PSU Berks) (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall), Ricky Devlin (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), and Snyder all took advantage of the additional appearances at the plate.

Kutztown returns to action on Wednesday for its final games before this weekend's conference opener.  KU travels to Virginia State on Wednesday for a nine-inning affair set to begin at 3 p.m.
