Kutztown Tops Wilmington, 92-68

Box Score

WILMINGTON, Del. – A strong first-half effort allowed the Kutztown University men's basketball team to cruise to a 92-68 victory over Wilmington University on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex. Freshmen Kenny Wilson (New Castle, DE/Delcastle) and Tracy Peal scored 23 points apiece to lead the Golden Bears to their first win of the 2012-13 season.

Wilson had a career day, adding a game-high nine boards to his 23 points in just his third collegiate start. The same could be said for Peal in his third start as the forward scored 23 points, had five rebounds and registered two steals.

Team captains Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) and Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) were the only other Kutztown players to reach double figures. Brooks filled up the stat sheet again, scoring 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, grabbing six boards and dishing out a game-high six assists. Fraction went on to record 11 points and three assists on the evening.

The big night allowed head coach Bernie Driscoll to reach a milestone 200th career win at the helm of the Kutztown University men's basketball program. Driscoll is the winningest coach in the University's history and has won three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Championships over the past five seasons.

The Maroon and Gold wasted little time getting to work, jumping out to a 14-2 lead as Wilson found Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) outside the arch for a three, just four minutes into action. KU kept up the pressure throughout the first, building its largest lead of the night at 25 off of a Wilson layup with 2:42 to go as Kutztown held a commanding 45-23 lead at half.

Kutztown slowed down the attack in the second half and shot 66-percent from behind the three-point line after getting some good looks. The Wildcats tried to claw back in the second half as they cut the deficit to 15 points on four separate occasions with the last one coming at the half-way point of the second. KU built the lead back up to 24 in the final 90 seconds when Peal converted a three-point play and the team went on to win by a final of 92-68.

The Golden Bears played their hard-nosed style of basketball, outrebounding Wilmington, 43-34, and creating eight steals to WU's three. Kutztown held the Wildcats to just 38-percent shooting, while KU found its stroke, connecting on 53-percent of its attempts.

The Wildcats were led by Herbert Dennis who scored 20 points on the night, going 4-of-6 from beyond the arch. James Pee chipped in with 13 points, while Rashaun Rasheed scored 11 off the bench and Tajee Almon scored 10 off the bench. The duo combined to shoot 10-of-11 from the floor.

The Maroon and Gold will get back on the road to face Philadelphia University on Tuesday, November 20th. The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
