Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Two shots in the second half were all the Kutztown University women's soccer team needed to defeat Gannon 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
The first half of play was a nonstop battle for the offensive advantage. Golden Bear
Sarah Black (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) had two header shots within a minute of each other, and her third header in the 12th minute was saved by the Knights' goalkeeper Maggie Brinkman.
KU goalkeeper
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) made two saves in the first half, but the minimal shooting by Gannon did not reflect what was to come, and halftime started with the scoreboard still reading 0-0.
The Knights opened the second half with an immediate impact, shooting on goal twice within a minute, both shots saved by Rakiewicz.
Gannon continued to control the game, until KU
Hanna Fenstermacher (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) made contact with a loose ball from 25 yards out, sinking it into the left corner for the first goal for the Golden Bears.
Retaliating with four more shots, the Knights failed to find the back of the net.
With time running out, Golden Bear
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) made an assist to
Taylor Higgins (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) who overcame a defender and beat the goalie to score the second goal for KU with only nine seconds remaining.
Gannon out shot KU 17-9, and Rakiewicz finished with eight saves.
The Golden Bears face Mercyhurst at home on Saturday, October 13, for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Keystone Field.
