Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa – It took an extra five minutes and 23 seconds of overtime to decide a back and forth game as Kutztown University's field hockey team fell in overtime to No. 6 Millersville, 4-3, Saturday afternoon on University Field.
Millersville jumped out to an early lead just 90 seconds into action as Katelyn Zapp netted the first goal of the day. In a first half where the Golden Bears were outshot, 14-1, they took advantage of their lone opportunity when senior
Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) tipped in a shot from outside the circle, tying the game at one at the 20:56 mark of the first.
From there, Millersville controlled the ball and scored two more as Paige Morrison and Champayne Hess helped build a 3-1 lead after the first 35 minutes.
Down by two scores, KU rallied after the break, creating eight more shots in the second half. Just over five minutes into the second, junior
Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) fired a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off a Millersville stick and found the back of the cage, cutting the deficit to one. Down a goal, Gregory crossed a ball that found freshman
Anna Behm (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown), who buried the games tying goal with 13:30 to play in regulation.
As time expired, Kutztown was awarded a penalty corner. Reynolds and senior
Amy Dando (Marysville, PA/Susquenita) each were able to get a shot off as MU's Lauren Sotzin redirected their attempts, sending the game into an extra frame.
In overtime, Reynolds made a nice move to get free on senior
Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion)'s corner but Sotzin kept the score even, saving another KU shot. Over five minutes into OT, Morrison got her second goal of the game as Zapp found her in front of the net to score the game's winning goal, as it ended 4-3.
Waltman played well in net, making 16 saves, one away from her season-high, as she picked up the loss. Getting the win for the Marauders was Sotzin who stopped six shots on the afternoon.
Millersville held an advantage in shots, 29-11, and had four penalty corners to KU's two. The two corners for Kutztown could not have come at better times, as a goal on either chance would have ended the game.
The Maroon and Gold will look to bounce back on Tuesday night when it hosts East Stroudsburg on University Field at 7:00 p.m. The Golden Bears beat the Warriors once this season, 1-0, on a late goal from Behm on September, 19.
