Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team defeated Mercyhurst 5-0 on Saturday afternoon for their fifth shutout in the season.
The Golden Bears opened the first half of play with an immediate impact. In the first five minutes,
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) had a header shot off of a corner kick by
BrieAnn Shipkowski (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central), and a shot on goal less than 30 seconds later, both saved by the Lakers goalkeeper Ellie McDougall.
In the 13th minute, a cross by Golden Bear
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) from the left top of the box found
Rubi Mink (West Milford, N.J./West Milford), who scored the first goal for Kutztown.
Five minutes later, Costello was in possession of the ball nearly adjacent to the goal in the top right corner of the field, and shot from the angle to curve the ball into the back of the net for the second goal for KU at 18:33.
In the 26th minute, an assist from Mink from outside of the box, crossed from the right side of the field found
Mariah Dimm (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), who shot the ball into the top left corner of the net for the third goal for KU, and the last goal in the first half for a score of 3-0 at halftime.
During the second half of play, a foul on Mercyhurst gave opportunity to Golden Bear
Danielle Suzenski (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood) to loft the ball down the center of the field from the midfield line, where
Taylor Higgins (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) beat the goalkeeper to the bouncing ball to score the fourth goal for KU in the 56th minute.
In the 74th minute, Golden Bear
Tess Arbegast (Carlisle, PA/Big Spring) crossed the ball from the top left corner to give an assist to Dimm who was positioned five yards out from the center of the goal, scoring the fifth and final goal for KU.
Kutztown outshot Mercyhurst 20-13 and Golden Bear goalkeeper
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) had four saves.
The Golden Bears play on the road this week when they travel to Clarion on Tuesday, October 16, for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
