KUTZTOWN, Pa. (January 28, 2012)—The
Kutztown University bowling team rolled its way to a 5-1 performance at the second day of the Kutztown Invitational at Heister Lanes in Reading, Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (29-21 overall) highlighted the day when they took down the reigning 2011 NCAA Champion, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, 1058-864 in their third game of the day. KU was led by senior Kayla Jones (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop ) (Johnstown, PA/ Westmont Hilltop) who threw a game-high 256 against UMES who is ranked sixth in the National TenPin Coaches Association (NTCA) top 20 poll.  Sophomore Deanna DiRado (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem) (Greensburg, PA/ Greensburg Salem) also had a great game, as she rolled a 244.

Kutztown also defeated Penn State-Altoona 957-811, Coppin State. 969-726, Bethune-Cookman 935-842, and Medaille 902-710.

Jones also rolled a game-high 255 against PSU-Altoona and game-high 205 against Bethune. Morgan Reid (Clayton, NC/) (Clayton, NC) led the Golden Bears with a 222 against Coppin State. Sophomore Brooke Bower (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) (Camp Hill, PA/ Cedar Cliff) finished with a game-high 216 over Medaille.

“Morgan stepped up big today,” Kutztown University head coach Joseph Ambrose said. “She struggled a little bit in the beginning but got it together. Deanna and Brooke also had some big 200 games for us as well. We had a lot of help today and it was an overall solid team effort.”

Kutztown dropped its final match of the day in a nail biter to No. 7 Vanderbilt 950-923, where Jones led KU with a 232.  Jones is currently averaging a 224 during the KU Invitational.

“Today was great and I'm happy with where we are at,” Ambrose said. “We let the Vanderbilt match get away from us but other than that the win against UMES was huge for us. “

The Kutztown Invitational will conclude on Sunday, Jan. 29 with three best four-of-seven baker matches in bracket style. Total pins for each team for the (12) team matches on Friday and Saturday will determine the schedule for bracket position rounds.

Kutztown who is seeded 11th will face 12th-seed Norfolk State in its first game on Sunday.

“We're 9-3 during the tournament, but we're shooting for 12-3 following tomorrow,” Ambrose said. “We think we can do it and I'm confident in the girls.”

Following Sunday's competition, awards will be given to the first, second, third and fourth place teams as a result of baker bracket position round matches.  Individual awards will consist of MVP and All-Tournament Team.  MVP and All-Tournament Team will be based on total pin fall for the six traditional team games.
