KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University hosts its long awaited home opener as Gannon comes to Keystone Arena on January 28 in a match between regionally ranked squads.
The Golden Bears are currently fifth in Super Region I, one spot ahead of the Golden Knights. Both squads are among the teams receiving votes in the national rankings.
The match could have added significance as Kutztown head coach
Robert Fisher closes in on the school's all-time coaching wins record. Coach Fisher currently sits at 123, just one win short of former head coach and current assistant
Dan Hinkel's program standard of 124. Hinkel was the head coach from 1966-72 and again from 1989-96. Coach Fisher's .654 winning percentage is already the best in program history.
His 2011-12 team features a trio of regionally ranked wrestlers in
Evan Yenolevich (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh (Edinboro)) (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh),
Desmond Moore (Easton, PA/Easton) (Easton, Pa./Easton) and
Brandan Clark (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) (Audubon, Pa./Methacton).
Yenolevich leads Kutztown's ranked individuals, checking in at No. 3 at 133. The sophomore is 15-5 on the season, including four pins, three major decisions and three technical falls. He leads the team in wins, dual wins (six) and tech falls and is tied for the team lead in major decisions. The fifth-place finisher at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships earlier this year has a fastest fall of 33 seconds, third best on the team.
Moore made his season debut in the regional rankings and is rated fifth at 125. Moore is 11-8 on the year, tied for third on the team in wins. The senior also has two major decisions and a tech fall to his credit. He finished a team-best fourth at the PSAC Championships in December. His five dual wins are tied for second on the team.
Clark is also making his debut in the rankings with a No. 6 placement at 285. The freshman has 10 wins already in his rookie year, including two wins by fall and a major decision.
Vinny Campanile (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley) has been ranked at 197 at times this season and rates among the national leaders in falls with 10. His 13 wins are second on the team.
Micah Bollinger (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg Area) (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) is coming off a strong weekend at the Regional Duals that earned him PSAC Wrestler of the Week honors. He pinned the both of his opponents at 165, including the No. 3 wrestler in Division II, Josh Shields of Mercyhurst. His 11 wins on the year tie him with Moore and
Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) (Reading, Pa./Reading) for third on the team and his six pins trail only Campanile on the KU roster.
While both teams competed at the PSAC Championships in early December, the dual can feature just one potential rematch from that tournament. Gannon's Zack Zelcs notched a 7-3 win over Ortiz at 184.
The Golden Knights are led by Ethan Swope, the No. 1 wrestler in Super Region I and fifth ranked in Division II at 149. He is 9-3 on the season, including 7-0 in dual action.
Swope is joined in the regional rankings by four of his teammates. Zelcs is 12-7 on the year with three pins, two tech falls and two major decisions on the year at 184. Adam Weinell leads the team in wins and pins in 2011-12, while ranking sixth at 133. He is 16-8 overall, with seven of his 10 bonus wins coming via fall. At 125, Matt Turek is also sixth and half of his eight wins have come via tech fall. Bret Terry, at 174, has seven wins and matches Weinell's and Turek's No. 6 ranking.
Gannon finished seventh at the PSAC Championships, one spot ahead of the Golden Bears.
The match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
