KU ranked fifth in NSCAA Atlantic Regional poll

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 7, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's soccer team is ranked fifth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic Regional top ten poll.

The Golden Bears (1-1 overall) are ranked behind West Chester, California (Pa.), Slippery Rock, and Bloomsburg respectively. Nine of the ten schools in the Atlantic Regional poll are Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schools. Following KU is Edinboro, West Virginia Wesleyan, East Stroudsburg, Indiana (Pa.), and Gannon (Pa.).

Kutztown won its season opener, 6-0 against Concord University. Junior Maria Borland (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) led KU's offense as she scored four goals, three of which were scored in the first period. Freshman Bella Jaffin (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick Area) had two assists off of Borland's goals.

Newcomer Janine Valerio (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) initiated the scoring drive in the 21st minute. Her goal was assisted by freshman Hanna Fenstermacher (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove). Fenstermacher recorded another assist on Borland's first goal in the 24th minute.

Junior Stephanie Borland (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) also joined in on the action when she scored in the 80th minute.

Defensively KU held Concord to three shots the entire game. As a team, Kutztown tallied 35 shot attempts.

The Golden Bears had a 3-0 setback against Rollins on Monday and although the final result wasn't to their liking, they were able to take plenty of positives things from that match that will help them throughout the season.

Kutztown returns to action Friday afternoon when it travels to Mercyhurst College in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener. The match begins at 4:30 p.m.
