KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 27, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's soccer team is ranked 22nd in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Golden Bears have been featured in the top 25.
In the NSCAA regional rankings, Kutztown is third, behind Indiana (Pa.) and top-ranked California (Pa.). Behind KU is Edinboro University, West Chester University, Bloomsburg University, West Virginia Wesleyan, Gannon University, Slippery Rock University, and Millersville University.
KU (6-2 overall) is 4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Last week, the Golden Bears shut out Edinboro 2-0. The Fighting Scots were ranked 24th but fell out of the top 25 on Tuesday. Kutztown capped off its week by defeating Slippery Rock University 1-0 on Saturday.
Senior
Carolynne Kahl (Bethel, PA/Tuplehocken) scored the game-winning goal against the Rock off a corner kick, with a minute and two seconds remaining.
Against Edinboro, Valerio tallied her fourth goal of the season in the 42nd minute to give KU the solid 2-0 advantage before halftime. Her goal was assisted by Kahl. Also scoring for KU was
Crystal Zerbe (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken).
Tess Arbegast (Carlisle, PA/Big Spring) was credited with the assist.
Maria Borland (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) leads Kutztown in goals (six), followed by Valerio (four), Zerbe (three), Kahl (two), and
Stephanie Borland (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) (two).
Shannon Pennock (Mansfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) and
Jordyn Davis (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) each have one goal on the season.
Bella Jaffin (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick Area),
Hanna Fenstermacher (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove), Kahl, and Valerio lead the team in assists.
Kutztown returns to action on Wednesday, September 28 when it hosts West Chester University for a PSAC game. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Keystone Field.
