KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 21, 2011)—Despite the heavy down pour that darkened University Field, juniors
Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and
Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) shined and helped the Kutztown University women's field hockey team take down East Stroudsburg University, 4-1 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game Wednesday night.
(BOXSCORE)
The Golden Bears (6-1, 2-0 PSAC East) are currently ranked sixth in the latest Kookaburra / National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) top 10 poll. The Warriors fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC East.
Labowitz finished with a team-high two goals, followed by Gregory who led KU in assists with two and recorded one goal. This was Labowitz's second multi-goal game.
Gregory and Labowitz are more than just teammates. The dynamic duo also spends a lot of time off the field, which helps their on-field chemistry. They have class together every Tuesday and Thursday and the pair has a combination on the field that is priceless.
“We just feed off of each other,” Gregory said. “This is our third year playing together and we finally just click right now. It's nice being able to know that sometimes I cannot even look when I pass and know that Emily is going to be there for the goal.”
Labowitz who now leads the Golden Bears in goals (seven), connected with Gregory in the 26th minute to put Kutztown on top 1-0. Seven minutes later,
Elly Skinner (Prompton, PA/Honesdale) assisted on Labowitz's second goal, giving KU a 2-0 lead at halftime.
“It feels good to help my team win,” Labowitz said. “As a junior I definitely want to try to be a role model and Jenna feels the same way.”
Sophomore
Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades) scored in the 58th minute off a pass from Gregory. Junior
Imani Ferguson (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) found Gregory in the 66th minute to push Kutztown's lead to 4-0.
ESU's Brielle Kessel scored in the 67th minute to put the Warriors on the board.
Defensively, goalie
Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) recorded five saves.
“This was a huge win for us,” Gregory said. “We have C.W. Post next and these conference wins are big for us. We just want to keep focusing at practice and playing hard every chance we get. We're going to keep each other fired up and keep moving forward every day."
Kutztown returns back to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when it hosts Long Island C.W. Post University for a PSAC East Division game beginning at 7 p.m.
