Golden Bears defeat College of Saint Rose, 3-2 at KU Classic

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 2, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's volleyball team went the distance by winning its home opener 3-2, against the College of Saint Rose at Keystone Arena in the KU Classic on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (2-0 overall) defeated the Golden Knights (0-1 overall) 25-23, 25-19, and 15-7. Saint Rose won the first and fourth games 28-26.

The first game presented its challenges to both teams, but Kutztown knew that it had to continue to dig deep and find its rhythm.

“This game was a bit tough but it definitely was a learning experience,” Cali Snell (York, PA/York Suburban) said. “It wasn't our best game, but I think in order to be successful in the end we need games like this in the beginning of the season to know that we can pull it out in the end.”

Even when adversity tested KU, the Golden Bears kept their heads in the game and continued to stay focused on the task ahead. They continued to lift each other up on the floor and they never stopped smiling.

Cait Hess (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) led the team in kills with 16. Snell finished with 13 kills. Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) and Snell were essential on the front line tallying 10.5 blocks. As a team, Kutztown recorded 21 blocks.

“It was great for us to shut down their big hitters,” Snell said. “When a big play like that happens it brings the emotions and intensity back into the game.”

Lindsey Smith (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) led the Golden Bears with 32 digs. Erin Kissling (York, PA/Central York) was there to help
Smith recording 20 digs. Setters Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) and Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) amounted for 41 assists.

Brittany Harman (Hanover, PA/South Western), who had a standout game for KU in its season opener against NY Institute of Technology, continued her performance against the Golden Knights. Harman was all over the place for KU as she recorded a career-best 10 digs, seven kills, three digs, and a service ace.

Kutztown returns to action on Sept. 2 to host the University of the Sciences at 7 p.m.
