KUTZTOWN, Pa. – After a pair of long road trips to start the season, the Kutztown University football team opened its home schedule with a 49-6 victory over Lock Haven University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover contest Saturday night at University Field.
One of the largest opening-night home crowds in recent memory was treated to another scoring show as Kutztown ran its record to 3-0 for the second straight season. It was also the second year in a row that KU scored at least 40 points in its home opener. Lock Haven dropped to 0-2 overall as its losing streak reached 34 games.
Ranked 16th in the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) and 15th in the d2football.com top 25 polls, the Golden Bears rolled up 538 yards in total offense, had six different players score at least one touchdown, and got a career-high rushing performance from sophomore
Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge), who finished with 100 yards on 14 carries.
Junior quarterback
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) was his usual terrific self as he threw for 280 yards on 22-of-29 accuracy. He fired three touchdowns to extend his streak to 20 straight games with at least one TD pass. Morton has 66 career touchdown passes and 13 through three games.
"We wanted to make sure we started fast," Morton said. "This was a great team effort and we're happy to get the win. The coaches had a good game plan for us coming into this week."
Junior wide receiver
Chris McCormick (West Chester/West Chester East) reached a milestone late in the first quarter as he turned a swing pass into a you-had-to-see-it-to-believe it 40-yard touchdown catch and run. That was McCormick's 100th career catch and 20th career touchdown reception. McCormick is tied with Elfren Quiles and Trevor Smith for second on the all-time KU touchdown list. He needs three touchdown catches to tie Mark Steinmeyer for the all-time lead in that category. Overall, McCormick finished with three catches for 51 yards.
"We were really excited to play at home for the first time this year," McCormick said. "It was great to see all these people show up here and support us. It's awesome to have 100 career catches. None of this happens though without everybody doing their job and blocking for me. The touchdown was a great play call."
Morton wasn't the only Golden Bear to throw a touchdown pass against the Bald Eagles.
Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) threw a 16-yard strike to
Justin Horan (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) on a perfectly executed fake field-goal attempt early in the second quarter that gave Kutztown a 21-3 lead.
Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) scored two touchdowns.
Josh Smith (West Lawn, PA/Wilson) and
Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) each caught touchdown passes for the second straight week.
While the offense lit the night with plenty of fireworks, the Kutztown defense was strong especially in the red zone. Lock Haven penetrated the inside of KU's 20-yard five times and came away with two field goals.
Brett Moss (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) led the Golden Bear defensive charge by recording two sacks and 3.5 tackles for losses.
Moss,
John Kreuer (York, PA/York Suburban),
Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley), and
Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) led Kutztown with seven tackles each. Ulmer had an interception, which preceded McCormick's milestone moment midway through the first quarter. With Kutztown leading 7-3, Ulmer stepped in front of a pass. The next time the Golden Bear defense took the field, KU led, 14-3, with 8 minutes, 17 seconds remaining.
"For me, I am a senior, so anytime I get on the field, I am fine," defensive tackle
Jason Henshaw (West Chester, PA/Henderson) said. "We don't mind getting back on the field quickly. Each week, we want to keep getting better defensively. Last week our back line was terrific coming up with five interceptions. So tonight it was our turn to play well up front because we wanted to make everybody else's job easier."
The Golden Bears averaged 18 yards per play in the first quarter. Kutztown's offense has been potent through the first three games by scoring at least 14 points in nine of the 12 quarters it has played. After Lock Haven sliced Kutztown's lead to 21-6 with 6:55 remaining following Noah Heimer's 36-yard field goal, the Golden Bears scored the final 28 points. The Golden Bears were 10-for-12 on third downs and 5-of-6 in the red zone.
Since the start of the 2010 season, Kutztown has the best winning percentage of any school in the PSAC. Kutztown is 13-2 (86.6 percent), which is better than Bloomsburg 13-3 (81.2), California (12-3, 80.0), and Mercyhurst (12-4, 75.0). The Golden Bears get an opportunity to improve their winning percentage when they host Cheyney University in its PSAC East opener next Saturday, Sept. 24 beginning at 1 p.m.
"That means a lot," Monica said of the winning percentage. "That shows what type of program we have here and how hard the kids and coaches have worked. We still have a lot of work ahead of us. We just want to keep getting better each week. Tonight, I was happy with how played red-zone defense. When it was time for the defense to step-up, they made plays."
