KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The 12th-ranked Kutztown University football team couldn't have asked for a better way to open it Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division schedule.  It used a second half surge to take down Cheyney University 49-0 at a roaring University Field Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bear offense proved it was too tough to tame for the visiting Wolves.  KU amassed 457 total yards, with the majority coming from junior quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington).  Morton threw for 326 yards on 22-for-31 passing while racking up four touchdowns through the air.  When connecting with receiver Josh Smith (West Lawn, PA/Wilson) for a 20-yard TD pass in the second quarter, Morton tied Andy Breault's school record of 21 straight games with a touchdown pass.  He has also thrown at least two touchdown passes in 19 of KU's last 21 games.

Smith hauled in two touchdowns Saturday and was one of three KU receivers with a TD catch.  He leads the team with five TD catches on the season and has 17 for his career in his second year in maroon-and-gold.

The dominant win over Cheyney was Kutztown's largest margin of victory since the last game on the 1992 season when KU defeated the Wolves 63-3.  It is also the first shutout in conference play in KU head football coach Raymond Monica's career.

"We certainly have higher expectations this year from last year," Morton said.  "This group of guys has been together for a couple of years now, so we expect to win games.  Last year was great with all our milestones we achieved, but this year we know we can do better and it all starts next week at Ship."

Nearly every member of the Golden Bear roster made an impact on Saturday's monumental win.  Junior Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) was a ball-hawk on the defensive side, swiping a pair of second quarter interceptions.  He had returns of 21 and 30 yards.  DiNolfi leads a Golden Bear defense that has now forced a turnover in 15 of its last 16 games, and now has ten interceptions in four games this season. DiNolfi leads the team with four interceptions on the season.

"Our defensive line has put so much pressure on offenses all year," DiNolfi said.  "They are making it easy for the defensive backs to make a play on the ball.  Every week, our goal is to not allow any touchdowns.  Last week we let up two field goals and we always want to get better.  We worked hard in practice this week and I'm real proud of our team."

Kutztown (4-0 overall, 1-0 PSAC East) scored touchdowns on all but one possession in the second half.  Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) ran in his team-leading fifth touchdown of the season from four yards out, early in the third quarter.  He ran for a game-high 77 yards on 14 carries.  The senior transfer from Connecticut has been the main focal point in the KU rushing attack, averaging 104.8 a game.  Frey entered Saturday's contest ranked 18th in Division II in rushing.

Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown) and Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) each had TD grabs in the third quarter.  Frazier's came from 17 yards out, while Mastromatto brought Kutztown fans to their feet with a 51 yard catch-and-run.  He has remained consistent for KU, scoring 16 touchdowns in his last 16 games.  Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) led KU through the air with his first 100-yard receiving game of the season (101).

Coming out of halftime has proved to be when the Golden Bears are the most dangerous.  They have outscored opponents 63-7 in the third quarter.  KU has also scored at least 14 points in 12 of its 16 quarters played this season.

KU has now won 18 straight games against Cheyney (1-3, 0-1) and won its 51st game against the Wolves.  Marcus Jones led the Wolves with 64 yards on 13 carries.  Cheyney's 196 total yards in the fewest KU has allowed this season.  The defensive line for Kutztown did a tremendous job of staying with the ball and silencing the Cheyney offense.  Brett Moss (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) and Karolis Bimba (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) each recorded a sack against CU and combined for five tackles.  Colin Henny (Lititz, PA/Manheim Twp.) and Bill McMonigle (Drexel Hill, PA/Cardinal O' Hara) each recovered fumbles for KU.

As great as the Kutztown offense was, earning its first shutout since the season opener against Saint Anselm last season was a total team effort. Punter Nathan Fehr (Bernville. PA/Conrad Weiser) gave the Wolves little chance to gain any momentum.  Four of his five punts pinned CU inside its own 20-yard line, including a 54 yarder in the first quarter.

The Golden Bears hit the road next week for a PSAC Eastern Division matchup with Shippensburg (2-2, 0-1).  KU took down the Raiders 33-24 last season at University Field.  Kickoff at Seth Grove Stadium is set for 2:00 p.m.
