GREENSBURG, Pa. (September 16, 2011) – The Kutztown University field hockey team experienced adversity for the first time this season. Trailing by a goal in the second half, the Golden Bears responded like champions and controlled the final 26 minutes to post a satisfying, 4-2, victory over Seton Hill Friday afternoon in a non-conference match.
(BOXSCORE)
Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades),
Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), and
Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) all scored in the second half to help the Golden Bears, ranked seventh in the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association/Kookaburra top 10, remain perfect in the early going. At 5-0, Kutztown is flying high. This is the second time in three years, Kutztown opened its season with five straight victories.
After Seton Hill (2-2 overall) stunned the Golden Bears with a goal five minutes into the second half to take a 2-1 lead with 30 minutes remaining, Kutztown turned up the heat. The Griffins were powerless to stop the assault. Koenig tied the game with a penalty stroke in the 45th minute. Gregory slam dunked a pass from
Kelsey Hunsicker (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken) to give KU the lead for good in the 51st minute. Gregory's goal also gave Kutztown its first lead of the contest.
Reynolds, the 2010-11 KU Female Rookie of the Year, provided an insurance goal when she scored unassisted in the 59th minute. Overall, it was a great team performance for the Golden Bears, who displayed plenty of resiliency in conquering their second road challenge.
Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) made three saves for Kutztown.
Imani Ferguson (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) also scored for Kutztown in the 10th minute of the game. Her goal tied the game, 1-1, which was also the halftime score. The game remained tied until Seton Hill struck first in the second half. From there, Kutztown unleashed its wrath and deep stable of talented offensive performers to overwhelm the Griffins.
Kutztown finishes its two-game western swing Saturday afternoon at Indiana, Pa. in a match beginning at 1 p.m. The Golden Bears dropped both meetings to the Crimson Hawks last year. With a win, Kutztown would begin a season 6-0 for the first time since 2007 when it opened the campaign by winning its first 10 contests.
