KU walking tall after loss to Shepherd

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 10, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's volleyball team dropped the final match of the PSAC/WVIAC Challenge 3-0, to host Shepherd University on Saturday evening.

KU (9-1 overall) was off to its best start since 2006 when the squad started the season 12-0. However winning nine straight games is still a feat to be proud of.

The Golden Bears lost to the Rams 25-21, 25-19, and 25-18.

Erin Kissling (York, PA/Central York) and Liz DiValerio (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) each finished with a team-high five kills. Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) tallied three kills and Katie Lutz (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle Antrim) recorded three blocks.

"We're a good team that played a bad match," Kutztown University head volleyball coach John Gump said."We had to make sure to remind the kids of that after the match. We've had a great start and I'm excited for the rest of the season. We're going to keep getting better."

Earlier on Saturday, KU defeated Fairmont State University 3-0,  by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-17.

Cali Snell (York, PA/York Suburban) helped carry the workload for the front row and finished with nine kills and four blocks. Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) led Kutztown in blocks with five. Cait Hess (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) also recorded nine kills and added two blocks.

Brittany Harman (Hanover, PA/South Western) and Erin Kissling (York, PA/Central York) also had wealthy contributions to the offense and added eight kills each.

Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) helped to orchestrate the offense and finished with 20 assists.

The Golden Bears return back to action on Monday, Sept.12 for the Shannon Sullivan Memorial game against Albright College. The game will be played at Pine Grove High School and will start at 7 p.m.
