NCAA ATLANTIC REGIONAL:Kutztown excited for second chance against IUP

INDIANA, Pa. (May 13, 2011)—The Kutztown University softball team will take on host Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, May 14 starting at 11 a.m. at Podbielski Field for day two of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.

KU defeated California University 3-2 on Friday afternoon to advance to the winner's bracket with IUP. Cal (28-13) will play Winston-Salem State University (29-13) at 1:30 p.m in an elimination game.

Indiana is ranked 11th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.

Daily admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children 12 and under. No pets are allowed at Podbielski Field. (NCAA TOURNAMENT PAGE/ DRIVING DIRECTIONS).

The Golden Bears and Crimson Hawks have become familiar with one another. They played each other on April 29 during the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. The game went on for 10 grueling innings, and IUP defeated KU 3-1. Kutztown's only run came from Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg)'s solo home run in the second inning.

Henninger leads KU with a .362 batting average. Leading the team in hits is leadoff batter Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) with 54. Hetzler is batting .348 and also leads the team in runs (32). Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) (.315), Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) (.307), Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill) (.306), and Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) (.303) are all batting over a .300. As a team the Golden Bears are batting .292 hanks to Kutztown's stellar defense, its opponents are hitting .222.

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars), Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick), and Stephanie Pritchard (Parkesburg, PA/Octorara) have combined for 275 strikeouts this season. Their stellar efforts have also helped KU record 17 shutouts this year. The Golden Bear's defense will have to be on point as they contest against the Crimson Hawks' offense.

Megan McCormick leads her team with a .418 batting average. She leads IUP in runs (37), hits (56), and homers (7). Monica Iachini and Kristen Tunno are batting .374. Michelle Bovono is also one of Indiana's big sticks with a .345 batting average. As a team, the Crimson Hawks are hitting .317

IUP's Erin Holloway was recently named PSAC Central Pitcher of the Year has a 1.29 earned run average. Holloway has 209 strikeouts on the year and has recorded 10 shutouts.

The loser between IUP and Kutztown will play the winner of Cal and WSSU at 4 p.m on Saturday.
