CALIFORNIA, Pa. (April 9, 2011)—A seventh inning rally helped the Kutztown University softball team slide by California University (Pa.) 4-3 in the finale of a doubleheader at Lilly Field Saturday afternoon. KU fell to Cal in the first game, 6-1.

The Golden Bears (32-9 overall) were trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning but Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township)'s leadoff single fueled the fire to get their bats hot. Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) reached first on a walk and with runners on first and second, Kutztown had to execute.

The big stick belonging to Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) couldn't have been more useful at the time, as she crushed the ball over the right centerfield fence for a three-run homer.

However, the Vulcans (23-9 overall) made Kutztown work for its final three outs of the game. Despite KU's 4-3 advantage, California started the inning with a single, followed by a stolen base to second. The Vulcans had another hit to move runners to second and third with no outs. With the big bats of Cal's line up coming to the plate, KU knew that it had to bear down.

The defense got the next three outs to close the game. Derr recorded the win for Kutztown and had five strikeouts.

“That was a big win for us,” Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. “Cal is a good team and winning the second game was a big statement for us. This win gives us some momentum for tomorrow's games at Shippensburg.”

In the first game KU's offensive struggled to produce runs. Hetzler who is doing an amazing job in the leadoff spot, opened the game with a homer to right field.

Derr was 2-for-3 and Heather Hannum (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) was 1-for-3 against Cal's Hope Spancake. Spancake had 13 strikeouts.

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) was Kutztown's starting pitcher. Glomb took the loss and in three innings she struck out one batter. Stephanie Pritchard (Parkesburg, PA/Octorara) entered the game in the fourth inning and had one strikeout.

Kutztown will face Shippensburg University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Robb Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
