MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (April 6, 2011)—The Kutztown University softball team defeated Millersville University 10-7 and lost the second game 4-2 in a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division games, Wednesday afternoon at Millersville University Softball Field.

The Golden Bears' (31-8 overall, 6-4 PSAC East) explosive offense was led by Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami), Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg), Stephanie Graver (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco), and Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill) who belted home runs in the first game against the Mauraders (12-18 overall, 2-8 PSAC East).

Henninger leads KU in homers (10), while Tedjeske has five and Isgro has three. This was Graver's first home run of the season.

KU got an early 2-0 lead after the first inning when Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) led off with a double and Isgro homered to notch two RBIs.

The third inning was highlighted by Henninger's home run. After that Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) reached on a walk and Kutztown used Stephanie Graver (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco)'s double and a single from Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) to score four runs off three hits.

Millersville had its turning point in the fifth inning and put three runs on the board to make it a 7-4 game in KU's favor.

KU quickly responded in the sixth inning KU and scored three runs. This time it was Tedjeske and Graver who combined forces to hit back-to-back homers.

The Mauraders scored three runs in the sixth and seventh inning but it wasn't enough to conquer Kutztown.

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) recorded the win for KU. Glomb pitched four innings and struck out three batters. Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) threw two innings and had one strikeout.

In the finale of the doubleheader, the Mauraders scored all their runs in the second inning after Allison Chew had a grand slam.

Kutztown put its only runs of the game up in the third inning scoring two runs off hits from Hetzler, Derr, Graver, and Tedjeske.

Jennifer Stow (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) led the Golden Bears and went 2-for-3 in the second game.

Derr took the loss and allowed five hits.

“Our bats were rolling in the first game,” Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. “But Millersville is not the type of team that quits and they came back in the second game and did what they had to do. It's a tough loss but we'll work on some things in practice tomorrow and get ready for Shippensburg on Friday.”

KU is currently in second place in the PSAC Eastern Division. The Golden Bears are three games behind Shippensburg who is first in the Eastern Division.

Kutztown returns back to the field on Friday, April 8 for a PSAC East doubleheader game at Shippensburg beginning at 2:30 p.m.
