GAME 2 BOXSCORE
KUTZTOWN, Pa. (April 30, 2011) – The Kutztown University baseball team ran into a hot conference opponent Saturday afternoon as it dropped a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division games to Bloomsburg University by scores of 4-0 and 5-0 at North Campus Field.
Saturday marked the final home game of the year for KU as its quintet of seniors was honored before the opening game. James Quigley (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem), Jonathan Grosse (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Bluepoint), Trevor Rosenberg (Sweetwater, N.J./Oakcrest/George Mason), Mike Dugan (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and Tyler Persun (Mount Joy, PA/Donegal) have all made an impact on this year's team, helping the Golden Bears win 21 games. Despite dropping the pair of decisions, Kutztown (21-18 overall, 11-13 PSAC East) is still alive for a playoff spot when the conference tournament commences in Johnstown in two weeks. The final standings won't be determined until Mansfield University completes its schedule after finals week. The Mounties (10-10 PSAC East) still have games against West Chester and East Stroudsburg, who are both 9-13 overall in the PSAC East.
Quigley and Dugan are the only four-year seniors on KU. They've been a part of some of the most successful baseball team's in program history and have truly gone through the ups and down during their careers.
“This year has been a lot different than years past,” Dugan said. “There's been a lot of new faces and a lot of new starters. Looking forward, we still have a strong core. A lot of young guys got time to play this year, which is great for the future of the program.”
The duo continued to improve upon their already outstanding career numbers Saturday. Dugan had three hits in the twin bill including his team-leading 19th multi-hit game of the season in the nightcap. He also extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Dugan has turned it on at the end of the year and is batting a career high .369. He is ninth on the KU all-time hit list with 192 and has a career high nine doubles and two triples this season. He also has 30 steals in his career.
Dugan and Quigley started every game this season for the Golden Bears. They have been a cornerstone to this year's team and have represented Kutztown with class, both on and off the field.
“I love playing with Dugan,” Quigley said. “He's always got a level head and when he's happy, he's one of the most fun people to be around. He's got talent through the roof and has done really well this year. I'm proud of Mike and am proud to say that I've been able to play with him for four years.”
Quigley is a four-year starter for the Golden Bears and is batting .286 this season. Quigley is sixth on the KU all-time hitting list with 45 doubles, and is seventh all-time with 126 career runs batted in. He has 13 home runs and 183 total hits in his career.
“Quigley came in with one of the nicest swings I've ever seen,” Dugan said. “As great of a hitter as he is, he has really grown a lot as a leader. I remember his freshman year he came in with not much to say. Coming into his senior year, he took on the leadership role and did a real good job. He's been consistent throughout his whole four years here and I'm real proud of him.”
The true personality of the team came out in Saturday's doubleheader. The KU players seemed louder than ever and despite trailing for most of the day, it always seemed to keep a positive mindset with each at-bat. Both teams are still hoping to continue their seasons at the PSAC Championships beginning May 11.
