KUTZTOWN, PA. (April 3, 2011)—The Kutztown University softball team split a pair of games with West Chester University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader earlier Sunday afternoon at the West Chester Softball Field. KU won the second game 5-3, and dropped the first game 3-1.

Kutztown (30-7 overall) improved to 5-3 in PSAC East play. The Golden Rams (20-14 overall) are now 4-4 in the PSAC East. This is the 10th time in program history that KU has had 30 wins and the sixth straight year with 30 wins in a season. This is also the seventh time in the last eight years that the program has won at least 30 games.

In the second game, the Golden Bears took an early led and scored a run in the first inning. West Chester tried to close in on KU's 2-1 lead but by the fifth inning, Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill)'s three-run homer kept the Golden Rams out of reach momentarily.

In the sixth inning, WCU had two runs off three hits, but Kutztown's defense kept the game in its favor.

Tedjekse and Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) were 2-for-3. Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) and Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) were 2-for-4. Henninger and Booth each had a RBI.

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) pitched a complete game for Kutztown and had seven strikeouts. Glomb faced 33 batters and didn't allow any walks.

The first game started off great for KU. Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township)'s lead-off homer to right centerfield helped the Golden Bears to an early advantage. Both teams continued to battle inning after inning and came up short for runs until the Golden Rams took control in the bottom of the sixth inning. Abby Block's three-run homer to leftfield gave WCU the 3-1 lead. Kutztown tried to come back in the seventh but were unable to push through.

KU was lead by Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) who was 2-for-3. Hetzler was 2-for-4.

Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) took the loss for Kutztown and had four strikeouts.

“We know that every team in going to be competitive, especially in conference play,” Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. “We are glad to walk away with a win today. We saw some good things and things we need to continue to work on. We left a lot of people on base in the first game but the bats started to come alive in the second game. We just have to keep working hard.”

Kutztown continues PSAC East play when it travels to Millersville University Tuesday, April 5 for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
