KUTZTOWN, Pa. (April 21, 2011) – Junior Rachel Mehaffey (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) scored a pair of goals, including the 100th in her career Thursday afternoon as the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team dropped a 20-7 decision to West Chester in its final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game of the season. (BOXSCORE)
Mehaffey had her 10th multi-goal game of the season Thursday and increased her team-leading scoring total to 40. With one game to go in 2011, Mehaffey has a chance to overtake her career-high in goals set in her freshman season (2009) when she scored 41. She is currently fourth on the all-time scoring list with 102 goals in her three year career.
Also scoring two goals against West Chester was Amanda Bushong (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and Leeann Pica (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy). Both student athletes have double-digit goals this year. Bushong has scored 15 goals in her 16 games. Pica's 18 goals and six assists both rank second on the team.
The Golden Bears (5-11, 0-10 PSAC) have continued to improve throughout the course of the season. They surpassed their win total from 2010 and have produced a fine set of young players of which it can build a future around. KU has been able to hound the ball and cause turnovers all year. It is currently fifth in the PSAC in groundballs per game (24.29), mainly due to the efforts of sophomore Randy Vite (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury). Vite has had a consistent year at midfield for KU and currently ranks second in the PSAC in groundballs (3.86).
JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) had 20 saves against the Golden Rams Thursday and increased her season save total to 196. The freshman ranks atop the PSAC in saves per game (11.64) and needs three saves in the season finale on Saturday to move into third place on the KU single-season saves record.
Kutztown closed its 2011 PSAC schedule on Thursday but will look to end its season on a high note as it will host Georgian Court University on Saturday at Keystone Field. Play is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
