MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (April 2, 2011) – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 11-10 decision to Millersville University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest Saturday at Chryst Field. (BOXSCORE)
This one hurt for the Golden Bears, who had a 10-7 lead with eight minutes, three seconds remaining following Leeann Pica (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy)'s free-position goal. Millersville's Brooke Fisher scored the winning goal with 12 seconds remaining. Fisher scored three of the Marauders' final four goals.
Kutztown fell to 4-6 overall and 0-6 in the PSAC. Meanwhile, Millersville improved to 4-4 and 2-4. The Golden Bears controlled the first 22 minutes of the second half to erase a 4-3 halftime deficit. Kutztown's defense was instrumental in helping it construct its three-goal advantage.The Golden Bears held Millersville scoreless for a 10-minute stretch during the second half.
Four players scored multiple goals for Kutztown. Kelsey Hogan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led the Golden Bears with three goals. Pica, Rachel Mehaffey (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford), and Amanda Bushong (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) all scored two apiece for KU. Mehaffey, Pica and Lauren Schlitt (Baldwin, NY/Oceanside) each contributed an assist for Kutztown.
Randy Vite (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) caused a team-high five turnovers and picked up a team-best six ground balls. JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) finished with 14 saves for Kutztown. The Golden Bears opened the second half on fire by scoring four of the first goals to open a 7-5 lead with 19:53 remaining. Things continued to get better for Kutztown as its lead eventually expanded to three goals following consecutive goals from Mehaffey and Pica.
Kutztown returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Edinboro University at Keystone Field. Game time is 4 p.m.
