Golden Bears run into tough conference competition in Millersville

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (April 2, 2011) – The Kutztown University baseball team ran into what hopes to be a minor setback Saturday afternoon, as it dropped a pair of games to Millersville University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at North Campus Field. KU fell 6-1 in game one, and 11-5 in the nightcap. (GAME 1 BOXSCORE) / (GAME 2 BOXSCORE)

Saturday's matchup featured two of the top teams in the region as the Golden Bears (14-10 overall, 4-6 PSAC East) entered the day ranked fifth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region poll. The Marauders (19-5, 6-2) are ranked second in the region and 25th in Division II.

Shayne Houck (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown), the reigning PSAC Player of the Week, hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season on Saturday and nearly hit a second one that barely missed curving around the left field foul pole. Houck had two hits and added two RBIs in the nightcap, increasing his batting average to .384 and RBI count to 24.

Sophomore Andrew Otterberg (Wall Township, N.J./Wall Township) also hit a home run in the nightcap, sending a towering drive over the World Series sign in left field. Otterberg's last home run was game a game-winning homer against California (PA) on Mar. 6. Otterberg is batting .310 and has 11 RBIs this season.

Millersville used a steady offensive attack in the opener, scoring in five of the first six innings. MU's Derek Kline went up against KU's Jonathan Grosse (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Bluepoint), with Kline going seven innings and earning his fifth win of the season. Grosse threw six innings and struck out two Millersville batters.

The second game featured a lot of scoring early as a combined 13 runs crossed the plate in the first two innings. The highlight of Millersville's six-run first inning was Zach Stone's grand slam. Kutztown responded to the MU outburst as four Golden Bears had hits in the inning. Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) and Houck each reached base on singles, and were followed by RBI doubles by seniors James Quigley (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) and Mike Dugan (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City). Houck and Quigley each had multi-hit games.

Jason Henderson (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) turned in a solid performance in relief for KU. Henderson threw three innings and allowed just one run off two hits. The freshman hurler holds a 1.00 ERA and has 11 strikeouts with just two walks. Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Tyler Persun (Mount Joy, PA/Donegal) each turned in scoreless one-inning outings in relief as well.

KU will travel to Millersville on Sunday for a doubleheader at Marauder Park set to begin at 1:00 p.m. Live stats for Sunday's game can be found by CLICKING HERE.
