KUTZTOWN, Pa. (April 18, 2011) – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 12-11 decision to Edinboro University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) thriller Monday afternoon at Keystone Field. (BOXSCORE)
The Golden Bears (5-10 overall, 0-10 PSAC) and Fighting Scots (5-10, 1-9) treated the crowd to an entertaining contest that featured nine ties and nine lead changes. Neither team led by more than two goals. Edinboro's Shannon Rohrich scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds remaining.
The loss spoiled an outstanding effort by the Golden Bears, who overcame a two-goal second half deficit and had numerous chances to break an 11-11 tie late in the game. Kutztown had three point-blank opportunities to grab the lead late in the game, but Fighting Scot keeper Michelle Zei made huge saves to keep the game tied.
Rachel Mehaffey (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) was everywhere for the Golden Bears as she finished with five goals and two assists. It was Mehaffey's ninth multi-goal game of the season. She leads the Golden Bears with 38 goals scored. Mehaffey scored consecutive goals in 40 seconds to give KU an 11-10 advantage with 3 minutes, 50 seconds remaining.
Emily Solt (Bowmanstown, PA/Concord) tied a season-high with three goals in a single game. It was her fourth multi-goal game of the season. Amanda Bushong (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) scored twice for the Golden Bears. Jen Dunne (Chalfront, PA/Central Bucks South)'s only goal of the contest, which was assisted by Mehaffey, gave Kutztown its largest lead of the contest, 5-3, with 11:45 remaining in the first half.
Marisa Kalodner (Havertown, PA/Haverford) and Leann Pica led the Golden Bears with four ground ball pick-ups. Solt led Kutztown with four caused turnovers and she added three ground balls. Kutztown goal keeper JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) finished with eight saves.
Edinboro's Rebecca Zajac and Kaitlin Magee scored four goals each for the Fighting Scots. Kutztown finishes PSAC play at West Chester Thursday afternoon starting at 4 p.m. The Golden Bears close out their 2011 season Saturday when they host Georgian Court in a non-conference contest beginning at 1 p.m.
