No. 2 seed on the line as Kutztown hosts West Chester in PSAC East regular season finale

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (April 14, 2011)—The Kutztown University softball team officially clinched a playoff spot with its sweep of East Stroudsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game, Thursday afternoon.

However the Golden Bears (35-10, 9-5) still has their work cut out for them as they try to secure the No.2 seed in the PSAC East. Shippensburg University (25-11, 11-3) clinched the PSAC East and No.1 seed by splitting a pair of games with Millersville Thursday afternoon.

KU hosts West Chester University (25-16, 6-6) Saturday, April 16 for a doubleheader that will determine the No.2 seed. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. WCU hosts Millersville (3-9, 13-10) on Friday, April 15 for a PSAC East doubleheader on South Campus. If the Golden Rams sweep the Marauders, they will be one game behind Kutztown, making Saturday's doubleheader a battle for the No.2 seed.

Kutztown split with West Chester earlier in the season. WCU took the first game 3-1 and loss the second game 5-3. Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill)'s three-run homer in the second game was clutch for KU as they tiptoed pass the Golden Rams on April 3.

Although these teams faced each other just two weeks ago, the energy will be amplified.

West Chester pitchers Kim Murl and Devin Utterback will have its hands full with Kutztown's offense. KU is led by freshman Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township), who is a triple threat that can hit for power, slap the ball, and has speed on the bases. Hetzler is batting .392 and leads the team in runs (28), hits (47), and triples (5).

KU's big bat belongs to Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) who has a .366 batting average. Henninger leads the teams in home runs (12), RBIs (41) and total bases (85). She is third in the PSAC home runs, RBIs, and total bases.

The efforts from Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), Tedjeske, Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg), Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami), and Jennifer Stow (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) have been beneficial, as they are all hitting above .300. The Golden Bears have also had some contributions from several other players. As a team Kutztown is batting .307 while its opponents are hitting .221.

Pitchers Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars), Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick), and Stephanie Pritchard (Parkesburg, PA/Octorara) have combibed for a 1.76 ERA which is second in the PSAC. KU has recorded 15 shutouts this season and leads the PSAC in fielding percentage (.976). The trio has 223 strikeouts this year and will hopefully increase that number during Saturday's doubleheader.

Offensively, WCU is led by Kelly Anderson (.353), Erin MacNamee (.348), Abby Block (.309), and Jillian Murray (.289).

Block was named PSAC East Player of the Week on Monday. Block hit .800 (12-for-15) with six runs scored, two doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs in six games last week for West Chester, helping the Golden Rams to a 4-2 mark. She slugged 1.533 and reached base at an .842. Last Tuesday, in a doubleheader split with Shippensburg, Block went a combined 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. Most of that damage was done in the first game, a 9-1 win, when she homered twice. She wrapped up the week with a 5-for-5 performance in the doubleheader split with ESU, driving in three runs, including an RBI single in the decisive sixth inning of the first game, which put the Rams ahead for good.

In its last meeting with Kutztown, Utterback had 15 strikeouts in two games.

Saturday's contests will be worth watching as both teams give it their all to determine their PSAC Playoff fate. KU will honor seniors Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) and Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill) during a Senior Day ceremony.
