SHIPPENSBURG, Pa (April 10, 2011)—The Kutztown University softball team enjoyed smashing the ball all over Robb Field in a 10-0 victory over Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game Sunday afternoon. KU dropped the second game 2-1.

The Golden Bears (33-10 overall, 7-5 PSAC E) are currently in second in the PSAC Eastern Division. Shippensburg (24-10 overall, 10-2 PSAC E) is in first place with a three game advantage over KU. However the win was a big confidence booster for Kutztown who recorded its 14th shutout of the season.

Four Golden Bears had multiple hits against the Red Raiders. Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) was 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI. Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick), Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami), and Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) were all 2-for-4. Isgro hit her fourth home run of the season in the fifth inning. She led the team in runs with three. Booth and Derr had two RBIs.

Kutztown erupted in the sixth inning scoring six runs off five hits to seal the deal on the game. Seven batters in KU's line up had at least one hit.

Derr got the win for the Golden Bears. She only allowed four hits and had three strikeouts. Chelsea Randall recorded the loss for Shippensburg and fell to 7-7.

The second game came down to the wire. With the game tied 1-1, extra innings were the deciding factor. KU used all of its efforts and put up a great battle but SU's Dana Ward led off the ninth inning with a triple and scored off Hope Cornell's single to centerfield.

Jennifer Stow (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) led KU in hits with three. Derr and Hetzler were 2-for-4. Nicole Colineri (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) scored Kutztown's only run in the sixth inning. Colineri pitch ran for Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) who led off the inning with a double to right centerfield. Colineri advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill)'s sac fly to left field scored Colineri.

Derr pitched all nine innings. The Golden Bears had nine hits to Shippensburg's six, but KU left 10 runners on base.

“Derr pitched a great game,” Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. “It was a really well played softball game by both teams. We just left a lot of runners on base. Shippensburg capitalized in the ninth inning and sometimes that's just the way the game goes. It was a well fought game and we're satisfied with both games.”

Kutztown will travel to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, April 13 for a PSAC East doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
