CLERMONT, FL. (March 9, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's team increased its winning streak to nine with a 5-4 victory over American International College and a 6-0 shutout over No.8 Winona State University at the National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games in Clermont, Florida earlier Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (15-2) are currently ranked 12th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 Poll and continue to prove why they are worthy of that status. Winona State is the second nationally-ranked team that KU has shutout during its NTC Spring Games. On Sunday Kutztown shutout 16th-ranked Tampa, 5-0.

Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg)'s two-run homerun against No.8 WSU in the first inning was just another piece of KU's offense that proved to be rock solid. Kutztown had five runs off three hits in the top of the first inning. KU who was up to its normal tactics, which is to score early didn't make any exception for this game.

With one out, Nicole Colineri (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) had a single to get things started. Followed by a walk from Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg), both Golden Bears advanced to second and third off a wild pitch. Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) used a walk to load the bases. Kutztown made the most of Winona State's mistakes and Colineri scored the first run of the game off another wild pitch. With runners on second and third, Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) had a double that was sent to right centerfield, scoring Lynch and Isgro. With two outs and nothing to fear, Henninger cleared the fence with a two-run homerun straight over centerfield.

In the top of the fourth Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) had a double to left centerfield that scored Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township), who had reached first on a throwing error.

Although Winona State had seven hits during the game to Kutztown's five, they weren't able to get anywhere in reach of KU. Derr had five strikeouts and helped earn the win for the Golden Bears.

“I thought Sam threw a heck of a game and we hit the ball really hard today,” Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. “She pitched a gem. The team played with a lot energy against Winona and you could tell that the players really wanted the game. We also played really good defense against Winona."

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, the Golden Bears slid past AIC in the bottom of the fifth inning when they gathered four runs and hits to take the led to 5-3. Hetzler started the fifth inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jackie Stow. Derr singled to score Hetzler but KU wasn't done yet.

Derr moved to second base off of Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami)'s clutch single to right centerfield. The Golden Bears used the speedy Nicole Colineri (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) to run for Isgro. With runners on first and second base, Kutztown received a break, and both Derr and Colineri advanced to second and third off a wild pitch. With two outs, and runners on second and third, Henninger walked to load the bases. Stephanie Curry (Winchester, VA/Millbrook) was the pinch-runner for Henninger. The bases weren't loaded for long, after Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill)'s hit to right centerfield cleared the bases and scored Derr, Colineri, and Curry. Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) also added a hit to leftfield to close out the inning.

American International tried to battle back in the top of the six and added a run. AIC had one last chance to close in on the Golden Bears in the top of the seventh but KU's defense was perfect using the first three batters for a quick three outs.

Kutztown's offensive surge came late in the game with it trailing 3-1, until the fifth inning. American International used three hits and runs in the top of the first inning to get on top of KU. The Golden Bears responded to the threat earning a run in the bottom the first. A hit from Tedjeske to leftfield scored Elizabeth Kangas (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) .

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) got the win for the Golden Bears. Glomb had four strikeouts and pitched a complete game to lead KU past American International.

Kutztown will conclude its final day of NTC Spring Games on Thursday, March 10 when it faces West Virginia Wesleyan College at 11:30 a.m. and Grand Valley State University at 1:30 p.m.
