KUTZTOWN, Pa. (March 29, 2011) – Rachel Mehaffey (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) scored four goals and added a pair of assists during Kutztown University's 16-10 setback to Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest at Kesytone Field Tuesday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)
It was Mehaffey's fourth game of at least four goals this season. She also scored four times against Gannon in the Golden Bears' last outing. However, despite her brilliance, the Golden Bears (4-5 overall, 0-5 PSAC) could not escape from a slow start. The Red Raiders (4-3, 2-3) scored the first eight goals and held off a furious KU rally. The Golden Bears displayed tremendous heart in battling hard after the tough beginning.
Emily Solt (Bowmanstown, PA/Concord) backed Mehaffey with three goals. Jen Dunne (Chalfront, PA/Central Bucks South), Leann Pica, and Lauren Schlitt (Baldwin, NY/Oceanside) also scored for the Golden Bears, who continued playing with passion until the final horn. The Golden Bears sliced their deficit to 10-4 at intermission. They opened the second half by getting goals from Pica, Mehaffey and Dunne to trim their deficit to 10-7 with 21 minutes, 31 seconds remaining. Mehaffey upped her goal count to 23 on the season.
Goalie JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) had another solid game in net as she made 13 saves. Many of her stops helped the Golden Bears get back into the game. Defensively, Randy Vite (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) led KU with six ground balls and Marisa Kalodner (Havertown, PA/Haverford) caused four turnovers.
This concludes a five-match home stand for the Golden Bears, who will return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Millersville University. Game time is 1 p.m. Kutztown's next home game will be next Wednesday, April 6 when it hosts Edinboro University.
