Kutztown has fighting spirit in a two-game setback to Shippensburg

BOXSCORE 1

BOXSCORE 2

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (March 25, 2011)—The Kutztown University softball team displayed a fighting spirit through 10 innings but dropped a 3-1 decision to Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at North Campus Field. KU lost the second game 5-3.

The Golden Bears (23-6, 2-2 PSAC) kept their voices loud throughout both games despite the unpleasantly, cold temperature. Shippensburg (18-8, 4-0 PSAC) and KU cheered loudly to kept its hopes high but the extra innings proved to be a true test for both teams.

The Red Raiders scored the game's first run in the top of the eighth inning. Hope Cornell homered to right field to give SU a 1-0 lead. KU kept the game alive with Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) starting the inning off with a double to center field. Derr then advanced to third on a passed ball and Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg)'s single to right field, scored Derr.

With the game tied a 1-1 in the 10th inning, the international tiebreaker rule was implemented. The international tiebreaker allows the last out for each team to occupy second base.

Shippensburg placed Dana Ward on second and Moira Johnson had a homerun to push the margin to 3-1. Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) was placed on second for the Golden Bears but they couldn't hold on.

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) was more than great in the circle for Kutztown. Glomb recorded eight strikeouts and her demeanor never diminished despite the long game and chilly weather.

“Monica pitched well in all 10 innings,” Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. “She gave us a chance to win the game in all 10 innings, you can't ask for more than that. The game just didn't go our way.”

The second game started to look like a repeat of the first but in the fifth inning, KU scored two runs to take the lead 2-0. Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) began the inning reaching first on a walk. Knipe advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt from Jennifer Stow (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley). Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) reached first on an error that allowed Knipe to score. With Hetzler advancing to second off the error, Henninger doubled to left center field, scoring Hetztler.

KU tried to keep its advantage but the Red Raiders used the sixth and seventh innings to get five runs.

“We are happy with the way we battled today,” Lawes said. “The first game was well fought and we never gave up. We played hard and we feel confident that we can come back tomorrow and get a win.”

Offensively, Derr, Henninger, Knipe, and Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill) were key for KU during both games. Derr had three hits with one run scored. Henninger tallied two hits and a RBI, while Knipe had two hits and a run. Tedjeske also had two hits.

The Golden Bears host East Stroudsburg, Saturday Mar. 26 for a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
