Freshman Samantha Derr named PSAC East Pitcher of the Week

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (March 22, 2011)--Freshman Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) of the Kutztown University softball team was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Pitcher of the Week.

KU (23-4 overall, 2-0 PSAC) is currently ranked 11th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 Poll.

Derr compiled a 3-0 record and a 0.32 ERA in three games, all starts, for the Golden Bears, helping lead them to a 6-1 record over the last week. She tossed complete games in all of her starts, which included two shutouts. In 22.0 innings of work, she allowed just 10 hits, one run, four walks and struck out 19. She had a WHIP (walks and hit per innings pitched) of 0.64 and limited opposing hitters to just a .133 batting average.

Derr started her week with a six-hit shutout, striking out a career-high nine and walking two, in a 2-0 win over USP last Thursday. She then tossed an eight-inning complete game in a 2-1 win over Shepherd, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out four on Saturday. Derr wrapped up the weekend with a one-hitter against Charleston on Sunday, walking one and striking out six in a 6-0 Kutztown win.

Derr has struck out 67 batters this season and has a 1.83 earned run average (ERA). Her opposing batting average is a .207 and she has made 15 appearances in the circle for KU. Not only is she an important factor in Kutztown's defense, she is also a great addition to its offense.

Derr is one of 11 Golden Bears that have over a .300 batting average. She has a .318 batting average and has started in all but five games. She has 21 hits and 12 RBIs.

Kutztown will continue its run in the PSAC East Division when it hosts Shippensburg on Friday, March 25 for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
