Tedjeske and Henninger's slug fest helps Kutztown to two wins

Salem, Va. (March 20, 2011)--The Kutztown University softball team used 25 hits in its two games on Sunday at the Salem Invitational to shutout the University of Charleston 6-0, and defeat Wheeling Jesuit 9-2.

The Golden Bears (21-4 overall) enjoyed sweet success at the Salem Invitational with a 4-1 weekend and had the chance to get a view at some in-region competition. Earlier in the week, KU moved up to 11th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) top 25 poll.

Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) and Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill) got a chance to take homerun trots around the bases in Sunday's games. In both games, the duo initiated the scoring for KU. Henninger had two homeruns against Wheeling Jesuit, and Tedjeske had a homerun in each of Sunday's games.

In the top of second inning against Wheeling Jesuit, Henninger had a solo homerun to put the Golden Bears up 1-0. Kutztown stretched the lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning. KU keep its bats going in the top of the seventh with three runs, to the push the lead to 9-0. The Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Wheeling Jesuit used three different pitchers against the Golden Bears' offense but that didn't have much of an effect on their bats.

Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) was 4-for-4 with a run scored and Tedjeske had two RBIs off her homerun. The Golden Bears had 15 hits against Wheeling Jesuit.

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) was brilliant on the mound and pitched a no-hitter for four innings. Glomb recorded three strikeouts.

“It was a great way to open the day with the bats going,” Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. “The bats were followed by great pitching and we can't say enough about our defense.”

It was a quiet game against the Golden Eagles until Tedjeske made some noise with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning. Kutztown scored three runs in the fifth and three in the seventh inning.

Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) was 2-for-4 against Charleston. Lynch had two RBIs and one run.

Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) pitched a complete game and allowed only one hit. Derr had six strikeouts and her great pitching performance is what helps make Kutztown a serious force. Both Glomb and Derr have been amazing in the circle and their role in the defense has been essential to Kutztown's success.

“We earned a quality win over a good team,” Lawes said. “Charleston is a good team but our bats came alive. The pitching was great all weekend and today we came out hot and exploded. Our goal is to keep working hard and get better each day.”

The Golden Bears return to action Tuesday, Mar. 22 for its first home game and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division doubleheader game against Millersville at 2:30 p.m. at North Campus Field.
