BLOOMSBURG, Pa (March 15, 2011) – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season as it dropped a 12-4 decision to Bloomsburg University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener for both squads Tuesday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)
Lauren Schlitt (Baldwin, NY/Oceanside) led the Golden Bears (2-1 overall, 0-1 PSAC) with a pair of goals. Also scoring for Kutztown were Amanda Bushnog and Rachel Mehaffey (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford). Schlitt's first career goal tied the game at 1-1 with 21 minutes, 37 seconds remaining in the first half. Both Bushnog and Mehaffey each recorded an assist on Schlitt's goals for KU. Freshman keeper Joann McLaughlin finished with 10 saves.
Randy Vite (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) had five ground ball pick-ups to lead the Golden Bears. Kelsey Hogan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) fired a team-high five shots, and Marissa Kalonder forced a pair of turnovers. Although the Golden Bears came up short on the scoreboard, the improvement is still evident. Last season in two meetings against the Huskies, KU allowed 23 goals in each game. Kutztown made the Huskies earn this victory.
"We played well," Kutztown head coach Sarah Greer said. "We know what we need to continue to work on to be competitive in the conference. I felt like our defense and goalie had a nice game. We just to improve with transition and offensive decision, which I believe we will as the season goes on."
The Huskies (4-2, 1-0) were paced by the tandem of Sam Mazzie and Aubrey Bossert. They combined for half of Bloomsburg's goals. Bloomsburg grabbed control of the contest by scoring the final six goals of the opening half to take a 7-1 lead at intermission.
Kutztown concludes its four-game road trip with a non-conference match against Philadelphia University beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Golden Bears edged the Rams, 12-11, last season.
