Hannum's two-run homer keeps UNC-Pembroke out of reach

PEMBROKE, NC (February 7, 2011)—Junior Heather Hannum (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham)'s two-run home un in the top of the sixth inning sealed the deal for the Kutztown University women's softball team as it went on to defeat University of North Carolina-Pembroke 8-2, in the finale of the UNCP Invitational. Earlier Monday morning, KU defeated Tusculum College 2-0. (KU vs. TUSCULUM BOXSCORE/ KU vs. UNCP BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears start the season 4-0 and was the only team at the Invitational that went undefeated. Kutztown's offense has been showing what it is capable of. Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) and Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) were named to the all-tournament team.

KU has been getting an early start in scoring and Monday was no exception. The Golden Bears picked up three runs in the first inning against UNC-Pembroke with hits from Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg), Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg), Isgro, and Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill).

During the fourth and fifth inning, KU used a sacrifice fly to right field from Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), and a double from Booth to pick up three more runs.

UNC-P quickly responded to the 6-0 lead, and in the bottom of the fifth inning the Braves had two doubles to cut Kutztown's lead to 6-2.

Tedjeske started the sixth inning off with a single to right center. With two outs, Hannum sent the ball sailing over the left field fence for a two-run homerun.

Senior Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) and Derr pitched against the Braves. Glomb recorded four strikeous.

Earlier Monday morning, Kutztown faced Tusculum College. Both teams were scoreless until the fifth inning until Derr singled up the middle, followed by Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township)'s single to right field that allowed KU to score two runs off an error.

Derr pitched a shutout over TC and only allowed four hits. Kutztown's defense has also been a positive factor for it during the tournament.

“We had good, sound defense over the weekend,” Kutztown University women's head coach Judy Lawes said. “Our offense preformed well and we hit good from top to bottom.”

The Golden Bears will have a lot to celebrate on its bus ride back to Pennsylvania. Although it is just the beginning of the season, KU's young team is full of life.

Kutztown returns to action in two weeks when it heads back to North Carolina for the Catawba Tournament in Salisbury.
