Derr helps KU to 2-0 win over Fairmont State

SALISBURY, NC. (February 27, 2011)--The Kutztown University softball team wrapped up the annual Catawba Tournament with a 2-0 win over Fairmont State University Sunday morning.

The Golden Bears went 3-2 over the tournament and improved to 7-2 overall. Kutztown gained victories over Queens College and Davis & Elkins.

After remaining scoreless for five innings, KU decided to get things started in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) had a double, followed by Nicole Colineri (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood)'s sacrifice bunt to move Derr to third.  Derr scored the first run of the game on a passed ball. Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) got in on some of the action when she singled to keep the inning alive. Elizabeth Kangas (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) was the pitch-runner for Lynch. Kangas would score from first base off of Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami)'s single, giving KU the 2-0 advantage.

Derr was 2-3 against the Falcons and the Golden Bears collected six hits.

FSU who made its first NCAA Tournament appearance last season was unable to score off of five hits. Kutztown's defense has proved to be one of its strongest qualities thus far. Pitcher Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) used eight strikeouts to keep the Falcons scoreless.

On the mound for the Falcons was Nikki Nuzum who pitched six innings. FSU's Chelsea Cobb came into to finish the game in the top of the seventh.

During the course of its early season, the Golden Bears have capitalized on offense and supported it by stellar defense. With great pitching efforts from both Glomb and Derr, Kutztown seems to be finding its flow.

Offensively, KU has had mutilple players step up and bring in some big hits.

"We're proud of the way the girls are playing," Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. "It was great to get a win over a team in our region today and it was a great way to finish the weekend."

Kutztown will return to action March 5, when it heads to Clermont, FL for its spring break to participate in the National Training Center's Spring Games. Over five days, KU will play 10 games, with its last one ending on March. 10.
