KU splits second day of Catawba Tournament

SALISBURY, NC. (February 26, 2011)--The Kutztown University softball team completed its second day at the annual Catawba Tournament by splitting a pair games with Queens College and Augusta State University, Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (6-2) defeated Queens 3-0, and fell to Augusta St. 3-1. Freshman pitcher Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) was key for Kutztown's defense and threw a one-hitter against Queens (9-7). Derr also added six strikeouts.

Nicole Colineri (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) continued to ignite the offense and went 4-4. In the top of the fourth inning, Colineri singled, followed by catcher Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg)'s double. With runners on second and third, Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) layed down a suicide bunt to score Colineri.  Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) kept it rolling for KU and singled to score Lynch. The Golden Bears picked up another run in the top of the fifth inning. Kutztown recorded 10 hits against Queens.

In its second game against Augusta St. (14-5) the Golden Bears constantly put the ball in play but were unable to find holes. In the top of the fifth inning, ASU's Jessica Thorton had a solo home-run to the Jaguars on the board. ASU came back in the sixth inning and scored two more runs on three consecutive hits, one of which was earned.

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) was in the circle for Kutztown and had one strikeout. Glomb allowed one run through five innings. Derr came into relieve Glomb and allowed three hits, two runs, and had two strikeouts to close the game.

"Overall today we played really good defense," Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. "Derr's one-hitter against Queens was definitely essential. Against Augusta we continued to hit the ball and we hit well. We made lots of contact but we just kept hitting directly to people."

Kutztown has one game tomorrow against Fairmont State, beginning at 10 a.m.
