Golden Bears bounce back with 9-2 win over Davis & Elkins

SALISBURY, NC (February 25, 2011)--The Kutztown University softball team bounced back from its first loss of the season to Lenior-Rhyne College, 4-0 to a 9-2 win over Davis and Elkins in the opening day of the Catawba Tournament, in Salisbury, NC.

KU is ranked 14th in week two of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Poll.

The Golden Bears (5-1) found their bats against Davis and Elkins (0-2) and used six runs in the second inning for some cushion. Igniting the offense for Kutztown was Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill), Stephanie Graver (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco), and Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) all hitting doubles. KU wasn't done yet and picked up a run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth.

Hetzler was 2-2 with two RBIs and one run scored. Tedjeske who was behind the plate this game for KU went 2-3. Nicole Colineri (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) had two hits and scored two runs.

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) fought through the cold conditions and pitched wonderful for Kutztown. Glomb had three strikeouts and allowed only one earned run.

"It feels better to end the day with a win," Kutztown University head coach Judy Lawes said. "It was a tough loss earlier against Lenior-Rhyne but it was nice to bounce back."

Earlier Friday afternoon, Kutztown and No. 17 Lenior-Rhyne went five innings with each other until the top of the sixth inning when the Bears took advantage.

Freshman pitcher Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) started off the inning with a walk, followed by a single. After striking out the next batter, Derr walked another Bear to load the bases. Lenior-Rhyne's Jody Mizelle was the deciding factor in the game as she used a grandslam to score all of the Bears' runs.

KU had one last chance to answer in the bottom of the seventh but wouldn't be able to respond. The Golden Bears had three hits, two coming from catcher Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg). Derr recorded four strikeouts.

Kutztown will face Queens College tomorrow at 2 p.m. and Augusta State University at 4 p.m.
