HAMPTON, VA (February 19, 2011) – The Kutztown University baseball team continued its charge towards a seventh consecutive Builder Invitational title as it defeated Briarcliffe College (N.Y.) 15-3 Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium. (BOXSCORE)
So far in the tournament, the Golden Bears have outscored their opponents 49-12 in their three wins.
Kutztown (4-2 overall) tallied 22 hits in Saturday's game and were led by sophomore centerfielder Gilbert Vega (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey). Vega had a game-high three hits and five RBI's, both of which were career-highs as well. He also had a stolen base. Vega is now tied for third on the team with seven RBI's this season.
Freshman Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) picked up the win for Kutztown, throwing five innings while allowing just one run off seven hits. He also had three strikeouts.
This was Stoudt's first outing of the season after playing in the field the previous five games. Stoudt currently holds a .304 average as well and appears to be a vital asset for the Golden Bears this season.
Fellow freshman Anthony Knight (Wayne, PA/Radnor) started the first game of his KU career against Briarcliffe and didn't waste any time showing the team what he can bring to the team. Knight had three hits Saturday including an RBI double down the right field line in the seventh inning.
Seven Golden Bears finished with two hits including the trio of Shayne Houck (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown), James Quigley (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) and Mike Dugan (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City). Quigley also added two RBI's including a double in the seventh inning bringing in Houck. Quigley is batting .348 through KU's first six games and is third on the team with eight hits on the season.
Also finishing with two hits was leadoff man Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton), catcher Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) who is currently second on the team with a .538 batting average, Andrew Otterberg (Wall Township, N.J./Wall Township) and Brandon Shurr (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley). Otterberg and Shurr also added a pair of RBI's apiece.
Kutztown will look to finish the round robin portion of the tournament undefeated as it goes up against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe Bloomsburg University in a non-conference match beginning at 6:00 p.m.
