Golden Bears roar to epic come from behind victory over Philadelphia

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (November 12, 2011) – The Kutztown University men's basketball team showed a strong resiliency in overcoming a double-digit second half deficit to take down Philadelphia University in a non-conference game at Keystone Arena Saturday night.  (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears (1-0) were down by as many as 12 with ten minutes remaining in regulation before they found their rhythm on both ends of the floor in their 84-78 win.

Freshman Mike John (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North) had his coming out party Saturday night and took advantage of his time on the floor.  He contributed 11 points in Kutztown's 21-8 run and finished with four 3-pointers.  John finished with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Senior Nate Edwards (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) was one of four Golden Bears in double figures.  He led KU with 23 points including 8-for-10 from the free throw line.  He made three of his six 3-point attempts and finished with three assists.

Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) had a double-double in his Golden Bear debut.  The junior transfer displayed his ability to run the floor and attack the basket as he went 11-for-14 from the charity stripe, including six of KU's seven in the final minute.  Fraction dropped 18 points to go along with a game-high ten assists.

Devon McBride (Richmond, VA/Hill School) began his first full season with the Golden Bears with a 19-point outing on 6-for-12 shooting.  His was 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and made all four of his free throws.  Shooting well at the free-throw line will be crucial in determining the level of success KU achieves this season.  It shot 78.1 percent Saturday night compared to 67.9 last season.

Kutztown was able to capitalize on PU turnovers, especially in the second half.  KU scored 30 points on 20 PU turnovers while only committing ten.

KU jumped out to an early 14-4 lead in the first five minutes.  Eric Brennan (Chester, PA/West Catholic) brought fans to their feet with a powerful dunk over defenders on a slashing drive to the basket.  The senior finished with nine points and led KU with seven rebounds.

The Rams (0-1) responded to the KU rally behind their freshman guard Nick Schlitzer.  Schlitzer shot extremely well, going 10-of-15 from the field and 7-of-8 from 3-point range to finish with a game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Temi Adebayo was able to create his own shot in the low post for the Rams. He finished with 22 points and was a major reason why PU dominated in the paint, 42-14.

Kutztown returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 15 for a non-conference game against Wilmington at Keystone Arena.  KU suffered a 62-59 setback last season on the road.
