KUTZTOWN, Pa. (October 19, 2011) – On a night where conditions were far from ideal, the Kutztown University field hockey team played one of its toughest and most hard-fought matches of the season. As many chances as KU had, it was unable to take down undefeated Bloomsburg University Wednesday night, finding itself on the wrong side of a 2-1 decision.
(BOXSCORE)
In its second to last Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match of the season, the Golden Bears (10-7 overall, 4-5 PSAC East) recognized three of its seniors in its final regular season game at University Field.
Kim Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley),
Emily Falko (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) and
Julie Rosenkaimer (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) were each honored before the game by their teammates and coaches.
Fittingly so, Angstadt scored KU's lone goal Wednesday night which tied up the game midway through the first half. On one of KU's many offensive attacks, the Golden Bears earned a penalty corner and an opportunity to build some momentum against the nation's top-ranked team. KU responded with a rally of shots on goal, ending in Angstadt's second goal of the season. Angstadt now has eight goals in her three-year career and couldn't be happier about her decision to transfer to KU in her sophomore season.
"I really enjoyed playing at Kutztown and giving everything I had to this team,” Angstadt said. “It's been great playing with these girls, and to have Coach Wesner as my coach has been great. I look forward to the future, wherever I decide to go."
Kutztown entered Wednesday night's match ranked eighth in the Kookaburra / National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) top poll. With KU's loss and C.W. Post's victory Wednesday night, the two schools are now locked into a third-place tie in the East. With the top three teams moving onto the PSAC playoffs, every game holds tremendous value on the future of the season.
Kutztown's final game is against West Chester on Friday, Oct. 21. KU dropped an overtime decision to WCU in its first encounter at University Field. C.W. Post travels to Bloomsburg in its final game of the season. Bloomsburg took down the Pioneers earlier this season.
Falko had eight saves for Kutztown in the setback. She holds a 7-3 record including a 35-21 record in her career. This season, she is currently fifth in Division II with a .782 save percentage.
In her career, the senior has 338 saves. Falko had over 100 saves in both her sophomore and junior seasons, and has two career shutouts with the latest coming in KU's 2-0 win over Millersville earlier this season. She has started in goal in each of her four years and hopes to take what she's learned in her time at KU into becoming a police officer.
"My time here has been a blast,” Falko said. “There's no other place that I would have liked to spend my four years. It was a lot of fun."
Rosenkaimer started her first game of the season against the Huskies. She has been a spark plug for this Golden Bear team and has continued to find ways to contribute.
She has two goals this season and ten in her career. Last season, Rosenkaimer had the game-winning goal in Kutztown's 2-1 home victory over Millersville.
"All three of them are such special young women and I'm really going to miss them,” head field hockey coach Betty Wesner said. “I'm going to miss their presence not only on the field, but off the field as well. Their overall personalities are great. This is a really good team and I'm proud of them."
Nicole Bruce scored both goals for Bloomsburg. The Huskies (16-0, 9-0) continue to impress this season and are one game away from a perfect regular season. Amanda Riley had two assists on the night.
Kutztown now prepares for its most important game of the season. The Golden Bears travel to West Chester on Friday in hopes of earning a victory and moving onto the postseason.
