BLOOMSBURG, PA (April 24, 2010) – Following the Kutztown University 23-5 defeat to Bloomsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon, senior Sam Crist took a little longer than normal removing her maroon-and-gold jersey for the final time. (BOXSCORE)
Crist and senior Janice Kinney (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) played their last games for Kutztown. Although both players were a little emotional, small smiles creased their faces because they know the lacrosse program is in good hands with the plethora of talented and skilled players on the roster. Sure this season was a struggle but there was some growth during the difficult season.
Kutztown was paced offensively by sophomore Rachel Mehaffey (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford)'s three goals. Also finding the back of the net for the Golden Bears were freshmen Emily Savini (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) and Amanda Bushong (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township). Freshman keeper Carly Waltman made seven saves.
“It was good to be able to work and improve with the team,” Crist said. “I definitely think in the next couple of years will be a good improvement and I think they'll get a lot better. There is a lot of good talent on the team. Even though we didn't win all the time, we always played hard.”
Crist has her future mapped out. After receiving her psychology degree, Crist plans to attend graduate school and “get my doctorate in something.” One of her best collegiate moments occurred earlier in the week when Kutztown rallied to defeat Philadelphia University, 12-11, on Senior Day.
“That was so awesome,” Crist said. “It was a nice way to finish out the home schedule. I am a little sad and I am going to miss playing here a lot.”
Kutztown head coach Sarah Greer noticed the growth in her team during the season. The Golden Bears came together offensively. The future is pretty bright as the Golden Bears have 16 players on the roster who are either freshmen or sophomores. Greer was glad to have Crist as a member of the team.
“She always worked hard,” Greer said. “She was a real consistent and coachable. She was also really strong on defense. During her career, she became more confident with carrying the ball.”
