KU defeats Edinboro 10-9 at home

KUTZTOWN, PA (March 27, 2010) -- The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team defeated Edinboro 10-9 at home in a tough yet exciting battle Saturday afternoon in a game that counted eight ties on the scoreboard during the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover contest.  (BOXSCORE)

Kutztown (2-6) had six players score. Sophomore Leann Pica drove three goals into the back of the cage. Sophomore Rachel Mehaffey and freshman Jen Dunne each contributed two goals. Sophomore Lindsey Crits, and freshmen Amanda Bushong, and Bridget Bollendorf tallied one goal each.

Tied at 9-9, Dunne scored the game winning goal with two minutes, 20 seconds left on the clock. Crits drilled a pass to Dunne, who did a full 360 degree turn in front of the goalkeeper  and shot the ball into the left corner pocket of the goal cage.

“All the credit for that goal really goes to Crits,” Dunne said. “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

Dunne also pulled Kutztown ahead from a 4-4 score at the start of the second half. Cradling the ball up the field, she spun around several defensive Edinboro players before slamming the ball into the back of the net with 27:08 on the clock.

Pica scored two of her three goals in the second half. Both her goals gave Kutztown the lead from a 7-7 and 9-9 tie. Bollendorf, and Bushong also scored their goals in the second half.

“We really just wanted to win and improve our record,” Dunne said. “During halftime, our captains and coaches got us real pumped up and we stepped back on the field like a different team, like the KU team I know we are.”

The first half of the game cradled between Kutztown or Edinboro holding the lead.

Mehaffey opened the game with a goal at 27:00 minutes. Edinboro responded three minutes later with Lauren Kincaid's goal. Mehaffey scored the Golden Bears' second goal of the game at 21:49. Edinboro responded by scoring two goals in two minutes of each other to take the 3-2 lead. Pica scored her first goal of the contest to tie the game 3-3 with 13:44 left on the clock.  Edinboro's Rebecca Zajac's goal eight minutes later was the last time the Fighting Scotts would take the lead.

Kutztown freshman goalkeeper Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) recorded six saves.

“This game was a lot of back and forth,” head coach Sara Greer said, referring to the amount of times the score was tied. “We did well in our transition passing, and working together to mesh as a team. The team played with a lot of heart and intensity today. “It definitely showed.”

“All week we were working hard on our transitions, ball control and hustle,” Dunne said. “We played with a lot of heart and poise today and the team you saw out there today, that's the team we want to be. This (game) was the turning point for our season.”

The Golden Bears will be back in action at home on Keystone Field at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31 when they take on the Millersville Marauders.
