CLERMONT, FL (March 11, 2010) – The Kutztown University softball team overcame rainy and windy conditions to sweep a pair of games Thursday afternoon. The Golden Bears beat Bentley College in their first game, 7-1, and concluded the day by blasting West Liberty State, 15-1.
The ninth-ranked Golden Bears (15-7 overall) ran their winning streak to five games with the two wins.
In the opening game, Kutztown scored single runs in the first four innings and put the game away with a three-run sixth inning. Maria Schiavo, Heather Hannum and Brianna Knipe had two hits each to pace the Golden Bears offense. Schiavo and Nicole Colineri scored two runs each for Kutztown. Katlin Arbogast struck out three batters and Stephanie Pritchard (Parkesburg, PA/Octorara) recorded four strikeouts.
In the second game, the Golden Bear bats' exploded by scoring nine runs in the first inning. Isgro and Colineiri drove in three runs each for the Golden Bears, who produced their highest single-game run total of the season.
Isgro, Schiavo and Colineri all had two hits each for the Golden Bears. Also for Kutztown, Schiavo, Kristen Cornelis, Katie Lynch, Krista Tedjeske and Isgro all had doubles and Arbogast struck out nine batters.
In the first inning, Kutztown sent 14 batters to the plate against West Liberty. Lynch had the big hit in the frame by delivering a bases-loaded double that cleared the bases.
Kutztown concludes its Florida trip Friday when it faces Belmont-Abbey College and Merrimack College.
